I wanted cruise and rear window defogger on my 87 Jeep Cherokee. I went to the servcie/part dept and asked what it would cost for parts to make it look like it came with them. They quoted me $2000. I walked around the corner into the showroom and announced I would sign the papers now if they would take my 87 in trade and $2000 for any Cherokee on the lot with cruise and rear defogger. They traded my minimally optioned 87 for a new 88 Unlimited with all the options possible for the $2000 difference. 6 months later the dealership went out of business because he wasn't paying Jeep for the cars he sold.
Sadly it wasn't very long before I got rid of the 88 Jeep. 88 was the first year Chrysler took over AMC Jeep. While the 87 was bulletproof, the 88 had all kinds of stuff breaking all the time. The things that broke were made from cheap pot metal instead of something durable. The dealership even accidentally drove it off a lift (not sure how that even happens) and broke a wheel and tire and I also had stuff stolen out of my glove box and cubby holes while it was in for service. I finally got fed up when the radio started playing tapes backwards (I think it was possessed) and the bumper to bumper extra warrantee that was supposed to cover electronics somehow didn't actually cover the electronics that broke. The only reason I would pay the premium for a new car is to not have anything break or need service besides oil changes for a long time. |
On the newer ones with drive by wire, all you have to do is plug in the switch... Was pretty easy, was just a matter of finding the right switch. ~$50 and 2hrs later. I has cruise!

I love cruise control. I use it a lot, even on fairly short pieces of road. For some reason it is just strange on the 911 with a manual transmission to feel the engine work harder going up a hill. Almost bed time for us. |
I only use it on long stretches really...
|
Pre-Porsche ownership used cruise anytime I hit the highway. I was actually quite a "just follow the guy in front of me," and listen to books on tape on trips kind of driver. Post-Porsche not so much. Especially after 90 928 GT ownership. Kinda turned me into an autobahn go fast cruiser. I do use the cruise on the Rover.
The last couple of trips down I-35 to Austin were a bit different. The traffic was so thick all you could do was just follow along. |
Cruise control was a joke in the 911. It's gone. No reprogramming needed.
|
You don't drive the 911 several thousand miles a month...
|
This is true. Stills is a joke, just like everything else that does not belong in a racing version of the 911..... Switches, window regulators, clock, A/C....
|
There is some satisfaction in beating a lot of those striped down trailer queens with an all the creature comforts and luxuries car.

Good morning, gents!
|
Good morning, Markus. How goes it?

Your 944? Bring it out here with all its amenities. You'll go home home crushed. There are 914's that'll run all over you.
|
The 924s... It will be gutted and hot when I am done with it... The 914s might beat me, but they wouldn't walk all over me...
My 944 is a heavy amenity laden pig, that just happens to handle like its on rails... |
Yes, in the 944, there are a couple that will. The drivers can drive. Always amazes me to see their times.
P.S. they beat the pants off 911s too. |
I didn't claim it was a stripped out trailer queen though...
Smartass... |
Not being a smartass. You sound like the typical, young, "I can beat everyone" type. Your 924 would probably be whipped as well. But it would be because of the driver. Those guys in the 914's have been doing it for longer than you or I have been alive.
I'd love to say something about Richard's 928.... But as far as I know, none are running with us. :p |
I wasn't saying that all.... Was just saying that I was building a fun to drive stripped out trailer queen....
I've seen an 1800# 914-6 absolutely slay our autocross. I know I can't hang with him... Most of the street cars though? I got that in the bag on a tight course... Night guys |
Night, Sidney.

The cruise control on my 911 tried to kill me. A cheap $1.00 fix all better. I still don't use it but its there.
