I worked as a cook in a pizza/italian joint when classes were in session, and mowed lawns during summer to get me through college. It was my source of food. I also had two other part time jobs during summers doing electronics assembly. One for a company that made computer battery backups for the military, and the company I work for today. I also designed and installed home theater systems in upscale homes, a couple of restaurants and a bank. I installed the sound system in the restaurant I worked as a cook later in. The systems I installed had volume controls for each room and they rocked. One restaurant even made a big deal about their sound system with a write up on the back of the menu.

I made this cool portable speaker box for the food prep area in the pizza restaurant that also fit neatly behind the seat in a pickup truck. It was so the people working in the prep area could rock out without disturbing the eating area, sounded fantastic. This guy came in and bought that portable speaker from the restaurant owner. The guy had a speaker company and stereo store called Stillwater Designs. He copied my speaker and sold it as The Kicker. Now that company is called Kicker. Tried to get a job working for the guy after doing the stereo install and before working as a cook at the restaurant and the bun head wouldn't hire me. Even after he bought my speaker. He deserved a....Boot To The Head.

Mornin guys.

Since we are on the topic of first jobs....

I was literally sitting in my chair during math class in high school when I was offered my first job. The professional photographer was in our room shooting a few pictures for the yearbook. I went to see him after class and got the job.

I was the photography geek in school. I was the staff photographer for the yearbook. I took all the pictures and processed the film and made the prints in my home darkroom. There were some photos I could not take because I was in school. The school had used the same professional for years. I was taking away most of his business at that school so he hired me.

The cool part was my job provided me with a Hassleblad, 4 lenses and strobe equipment. I had photos published in Time magazine and many newspapers. All while still in high school.

My high school had no photography equipment at all, no darkroom or anyone teaching photography.

Here is a photo of me in 1972 or 1973.

Sid, just remember, you don't have a wife, a mortgage a car payment nor arthritis, so it isn't all that bad.
You have my number, call me if ya just need to unload. I am married I know how to sound like I am listening. :)

porsche4life 02-12-2010 09:37 AM

Thanks Rick, SmileWavy

I think I'll make it though... Just gotta make it through this BIO class... Then I am hightailing it home.... Putting the 944 on the lift so I can start checking it over for autocross.... Giving the corrado a final detail and wax.... Hopefully all that cheers me up or at least helps me clear my mind.... I just feel like I am living in a daze these last few weeks.... Just going through the motions not giving a shyte about anything....

I grew my moustache while Spiro Agnew was still vice-president. He came to town to make a speech and I photographed him. I had to run home and change into a suit & tie and shave. I cut my lip real bad. I solved that problem by not shaving again.

I did not grow my beard until 1975 or 1976.

damned flashing things in my rear view mirror.

RKDinOKC 02-12-2010 11:02 AM

To relieve stress I autocross. The concentration adrenaline rush from driving at the limits of traction really clears me out. When driving a lap I am "in the zone." So focused on where I want the car to be that I can't see anything else and don't even hear the radio. If you have ever seen the movie "Driven" with Sylvester Stallone, the part where he is whistling is the best description I've seen of driving "in the zone." I am so relaxed and destressed after autocrossing I typically go home and fall asleep for a couple hours.

Before I discovered autocrossing I flew radio controlled airplanes. Was similar concentration related adrenaline rush. Before RC planes I took blood pressure medication.

Snap off the damned mirror and keep driving.

RKDinOKC 02-12-2010 11:09 AM

I thought flashy things in the rear view mirror were a sign you needed to speed up!
