I know. I was mooching truck favors from my next door neighbor in SoCal for about a year. He's a great guy, but I just didn't feel right counting on his generosity. So, on our most recent trip, we spent two of our days shopping for and buying our truck. It's already made 5 trips to the landfill to get rid of (de)construction debris from our renovation projects. I love it!

Is the car issue with the engine management or with the body stuff. The reason I ask is there is a lot of VW in the pre 85.5 944's. They are basically re-skinned 924S's

The initial getting it started problems appear to be with the engine management. The fuel pump will cut on if you jump it but, even after changing the DME relay and the sensors it will not cut on when you try to start it. Hubs turned it over by hand(which is good because it's not locked up obviously) but we have no fuel, no spark etc.
Did you see my write-up on the sequence of events for a engine start? It explains how the DME/relay/sensors all work.

Took a little while to find ;-)

Here's how the DME relay works;

When you turn your key to ON, the first relay is energised. I stays energised in the START position. This relay provides 12V to the DME (pins 18 & 35).

When the key is in the START position, 12V is also provided to the DME on Pin4. Through circuitry in the DME, this 12V causes a GND out on Pin20 that energises the second relay and turns on the fuel pump.

After the car has started, Pin4 no longer has 12V to provide to the DME circuitry that provides a GND for the fuel pump part of the relay. But with the engine running, the speed sensor sends its signal to the DME and again through the DME circuitry, it produces the GND signal from Pin20 and keeps the fuel pump running.

Cheers,

Huh?

V-Day is the one homemade Hallmark holiday I get to skip over, I called it way back when and have a built in free pass to ignore that one

When we saw them last year they had a huge computer controlled sound board.
