I use Brad Penn in the 911. I got my first case from Charles Navarro of LN Engineering but then I found out that my local shops stock it so I just get it there. Used to use Castrol and not a big fan of it. Seemed to get watery quickly, even though it has high Z and P (at least the high mileage 20W50). Also I hear from Charles that the high detergents in Castrol hamper the ZDDP formation.

this is the second reference to 'watery'.... i don't know that i've seen my oil get 'watery'. does it look/feel thin, or something?

nynor 07-13-2013 09:32 PM

slodave just helped me out with some info on rotella t. then i found this, re. its zddp content:

Hi,
During last week's ZDDP thread I said I would query Shell's Chemists about ZDDP content in Shell Rotella T 15 W-40 motor oil.
The original post is now back to oblivion so I renewed their answer here.

"There is approximate 1200 parts per million ZDDP in Rotella T 15W-40,
which is 50% higher than is allowed in Starburst motor oils (API
SN/GF-5). Thank you for your interest in Shell products.

Richard Moore"

from Shell Oil's answer to "Questions to our Chemists"

Can anyone give me a quick synopsis of this thread? I don't want to read it from the beginning.

Yes- thin, less viscous. Like water. Although I did have a bit more fuel contamination (MFI will do that when it is out of tune) when running Castrol and that would have affected things a lot. Switched oils around the same time as a FI tune-up.

when you get bored of hoegaarden, you should try some other belgian beers. blondes would probably be right for you. leffe and duval are some good ones that you should be able to find. when you come to salt lake, i can set you up with some good local examples of the style.

nynor 07-13-2013 10:08 PM

oh, and belgian golden ales.

Definitely. I had a few chimays earlier this year. Also a good beer.

When I describe and oil as getting watery, if measured at the proper temps have usually not lost any actual viscosity. However it seems thinner on the dipstick and when drained. On the 951 and 928 this also shows as lower oil pressures at idle when up to temp. With a good oil when fresh warmed idle pressure is around 3 barr. As the oil thins, ages, gets contaminated, or gets "watery" the warmed idle pressure is closer to 2 barr.

Most oils, after 3 or 4 autocross laps, drop down below 2 barr and sometimea low enough the low oil pressure light comes on. Turning the car off and letting it cool for 10 minutes or so usually brings it back up to just above 2 barr, or reving up a couple hundred rpm off idle does the same. Saw this on both my 951 and 928. I always took it as a sign to change the oil.

ah... chimay.... okay stuff.

you should try Pranqster and Brother Thelonious by north coast brewing company. those beers are the bomb diggity, IMO. be careful, though, they'll sneak up on you in a big way.

i never see the oil pressure go below 2 bar on my 951. even autocrossing it on 100F+ days, i've never seen it dip below 2 bar.

speaking of autocross, i am missing tomorrow's because my dang foot decided to act up again. this not drinking anymore is really throwing my body/chemistry for a loop.

nynor 07-13-2013 10:54 PM

good night, stijners.

RKDinOKC 07-13-2013 11:40 PM

My 951 wasn't even close to what you might call stock.

RKDinOKC 07-13-2013 11:51 PM

How do they do it just did a show on Chimay.

You guys are uncannily busy with this thread I am pleased to see. Closing in on 100k posts. Remarkable for a thread that started with a post with the sole purpose just to wake up Stijn.

So Are You Awake yet, Stijn!?? SmileWavy
