Sounds like it was a good move Glen.
Are there any other air-cooled cars besides yours? |
Had a fun ride on the Sporty, stopped and enjoyed a cigar along the way.
The little Gopro works pretty darn good overall, but is less than stellar on darker nights. I'm hoping I can remedy that with a brighter headlight bulb on the bike. The one in there right now is pretty weak. |

What does 350 to 400 range mean?
I was usually happy if I got 2 to 3 seconds faster than my first run. For around 70 second course considered that a good improvement. That meant I was braking later and managing the corner drifts better. My fastest run on the two sets of 4 was always the 3rd run. On the 4th I would get a little too close to the edge somewhere and lose time. Sure miss being able to heel and toe. |
I am guessing I have done 350 or maybe 400 auto crosses over the 40 years.
And Jim, no other air cooled cars. I was kidding with one of the 2015 Turbo S drivers that there should be a 10th second time penalty for every ounce of water and a 1 second penalty for every acronym the car has like ABS, PDK, or PSAM. And even better a 1 second discount for every decade old the car is old. He did not think that was a good idea. |
My chiropractor is a BMW guy and has attended the BMW racing school. He was the fastest in his class but still quite a bit slower than the professional drivers they had has instructors. He asked how they could be so much faster. They siad, "Easy, they aren't our cars."
I've heard several times that non-professionals driving Porsches are much closer to the times posted by professionals in Porsches than any other brand. They are just easier to get closer to the limits. Have also had 3 different very good driving instructors ride with me to give me tips. Two of them told me I was doing better than they were. One of those kept yelling brake just a fraction of a second before I hit my braking point. The one that had any recommendation was to get stickier tires. The one with thei stickier tire comment let me drive his track prepped car. I not only out-did his times in his own car, but because he had sticker tires, out did my times in own car. I don't know what they use to put cars in different classes or how the SSCA does its handicaps to make times comparatively competitive. |

Thought air cooled was supposed to be so much lighter than water cooled.
My GTS has 4 gallons of water for engine cooling, that is 572 oz. or about 32 lbs. Are you saying that having water cooling makes my GTS just over 9 1/2 MINUTES faster! Perhaps a weight to horsepower ratio points system would be more accurate. The lower the ratio the more points you get. My 928 GT weighed 3400 lbs and 325 hp, 9.46/1. My 944T weighed 2900lbs and 330 hp, 8.78/1 and was 2 seconds faster per lap than the GT. As for the acronyms the 928 GTS does have ABS and PSD, but that is all. Make sure LSD or Limited Slip Differential is also included in the acronyms as that is what PSD is. Being a 94 it gets 2 decade seconds getting back my acronym penalty. You could also have a points system based on the wear rating of the tires! The 90 GT and the 88 944 turbo both zero out on the age and acronym thing. Did have race compound 40 rated on the 944T and high performance street 180 rated on the GT. The 944T had a little less water than the GT. Wjen autocrossing my 2001 BoxterS I always ran on high performance street tires. Was usually the fastest car on street tires. I only considered those faster than me on racing compounds as comparitively being faster if they were more than 2 seconds faster. |
Goos mornin yall

Air cooled 911s are lighter than the later water cooled cars but since the very beginning of the 911 they got faster each model. We had one section of track that was just a slightly curved straight. I was just getting to the red-line in 3rd and I heard one very fast driver in a Cayman S say they were almost ready to shift into 5th. The HP to weight ratio is not in my favor. One guy had a 911 Turbos S with 620 HP wheel HP on the dyno. That is right at 3 time my HP.
In the end as I have said many times, I can't care less about super fast times. I go to have fun. It is nice to see the times and see the speed improvement for the different things I try. My slowest run was when the rear end broke loose in the horseshoe. Wagging the rear end like a puppy's tail is not the fastest way through I can promise. The new tires are just totally different. The 15 inch old M&S rated tires would approach their limit and then give up with no real warning. The new tires are way more predictable and the limit was way higher especially under braking. I know I was giving up a second or more braking early going into the horseshoe. That is better that going off track. Good Monday morning everyone. |
Yep, braking and corner entry are BIG. Every body can mash the gas. Braking and corner entry are basically what I tried to teach in the classes I taught. It was also a great opportunity to get used to a new setup.
That carousel turn at the south end was the one I really oushed my late braking. If you go too wide it's pretty level and uneventful, you just pickup a little grass. The Horseshoe on the East end can tear up your car if you go to wide. It is banked a little and drops off. Plus a lot of car go off there making ruts too. Alway slowly approach the late braking so going wide to mean meant I wasn't riding the inside edge of the corner. Helped a little that it was banked. There are a LOT of places out there where going off can really damage a car and just ain't worth pushing it in those areas. It would be nice if there was a big parking lot to setup courses on so you could go wild without having to worry about anything but buffing off the cone marks. Technically a autocross is supposed to be designed with a top speed of 65mph. In my white 944 Turbo I was hitting just over 100 when we were using the Lloyd Noble parking lot. I like it when they put up more cones to slow it down, it makes it more challenging seeing how fast ypu can drive not just seeing how fast the car can go. I'm sure if Andy and his bunch are coming to them it is probably being setup even more like a track than an autocross. I know the Corvette club puts a LOT less cones up and have a lot more offs and car damaging. |
Your auto crosses aren't run in a big parking lot? Then where are they run?

morning all. had a migraine on Friday that rolled into Saturday so I lost the weekend and here I am back at work.
|
That sucks, David. I'm suffering from allergies, and it's slowed me down today.
This morning, my wife & I were walking on/along the old Valencia F1 circuit and someone was flogging a Citroen 2CV on it. Looked like a helluva lot of fun. This is similar to the car we saw, but, alas, no babe! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1456153704.jpg |

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1456154121.jpg This is part of the east horseshoe. We are just super lucky to have use of the facility. When they call and mention they need more cones all we ask is how many and what size and we get them on the way. The timing tower was in need of maintenance. The department that owns it said their budget was never going to allow them to fix it. The local Corvette club fixed it up and we helped pay for that. |

It is a fun fun place. The most fun you can have in a car with yer clothes on!
We charge $20 for PCA members and $30 for non members. That is what pays for most of our club expenses and the charitable donations. We gave a check for 4 grand to a local charity this year and about 20 grand over the last 10 years. We had a big turnout yesterday, 37 cars. |
I do miss the track there! Autocross here in AZ is a little less fun. Although they do run the big track at Bondurant, just not every month
|
Hey all.
I'm not big on Mustangs but we had one pass us on the highway yesterday that sounded like a race car. It was new and had manufacturer's plates which indicates it was being tested. He let off right beside us and I could hear the exhaust crackle over our radio. I wasn't thinking fast enough to get a pic and he exited right after he passed. I never autocrossed my 911 but did a couple of fun days at the track. |
No autocrosses around here but I am considering taking the Cobra to the Midwest Shelby Club track days at Blackhawk Farms and Road America. I need to have a proper full width roll bar welded in before I can take it though.
