One of our club members was relating a story about his 1989 911 Turbo. He is now retired, but he is a surgeon and it was at dawn on the way to the hospital for an internal bleed on a patient emergency surgery. Anyway, a Mustang pulled up next to him and revved his engine. The doc was in just the right mood, so he hit the gas when the light changed. Through 1st to redline, and into 2nd to redline. Just then he saw a cop nail him with RADAR. He slowed down and pulled over in a safe spot. The cop was writing the ticket and he said I have to ask, just how fast was I going. 92 in second gear. The cop asked why he was in a such a hurry that early and he showed the cop his pager with the message to come in for surgery. The cop told him to slow it down, and only wrote him for 9 over the limit.

I have never had a really fast car, so I never have street raced. I have been in lots of street races I did not know I was in except to see some other car vanish off accelerating hard. Lots of folks must think I have some hot engine in the Elky because it does have a nice rumble at idle with the dual exhaust, but a bone stock base 350 is not a hot rod. It would be easy and fairly cheap to make lots more power. I am just not interested. That means a new rear end like a Ford 9 inch, bigger brakes and disks in the rear. Lots of money just to get less gas mileage.

When I had the guy building the dual exhaust I kept telling him, I do NOT want a loud car. His first try had a ton of droning and was just too loud. So he put in a cross pipe, and bigger mufflers of each side. It would have been horrible for a road trip to Enid with that drone. Now it is just right.

I never had a fast car so never really street raced either. Well, I never really street raced any of my cars. Had a couple impromptu runs on the interstate up to 90 or so. A friend borrowed my big block Coronet convertible and had a guy in a mid-80s Mustang keep prodding him on a frontage road. My buddy floored it and left 2 nice black stripes from 35mph and they were 100' long is all. The Mustang decided to leave him alone.

I do remember one race I guess. I had a little runabout with almost 90hp and raced a Yugo from a stoplight. "Race" being very figurative here since we couldn't break the speed limit to the next stoplight and still stop in time.

I once had a passenger stop breathing in the Cobra from a dead stop up through most of 3rd gear. She had her hands crossed over the top of her chest and her eyes were really big.

I've had some fast cars, but every one had quiet exhaust. As quiet as I could make it. I like sleepers.

Oh wait, there was that 65 bug with the megaphone exhaust: that wasn't quiet at all but I was 16 and only kept it on the car for a weekend.
Dad said to quiet it down or he was going to call the tow truck.

flipper35 10-23-2018 09:18 AM

The Cobra is loud but not obnoxious and is quieter on the highway. Wouldn't be a sleeper no matter what though, everyone assumes it is faster than it really is. The Coronet was factory exhaust.

So, we have new hardware and I have ro register it for warranty and it says this.

When prompted, please enter this activation number (case sensitive):

I did not realize numbers were case sensitive, good thing they told me!

Porsche-poor 10-23-2018 09:31 AM

if you want to make a "case" about it use a smaller font.

Most likely that prompt was written by some Indian or Korean programmer that does not really speak English. And many registration "numbers" have letters of the alphabet in them. With digits only they have to use a lot of digits to make a secure number. With letters that are case sensitive they have 26 letters x 2 for each space. 27 x 2 is you count the & and a tone more if you allow all the characters on a standard keyboard.

It always bugs me when I am prompted for my "PIN Number" It is just a PIN not a personal identification number number.

sammyg2 10-23-2018 10:22 AM

I keep my pin number written on my hot water heater irregardless.

I've had slow cars, fast cars, sleepers, and cars that looked and sounded fast but were't.

When driving my 944Turbos seems like there was alwsys a Mustang or Firebird that wanted to race.

When I drive the 928's there always seem to be legitimately fast cars that I've noticed purposefully hang back in traffic to keep from getting next to me. Figured it's just because the 928 sounds good.

Never went out looking for races like my HS friends did though.

Just got an email from Rennlist. Says my 2019 911 is waiting. Just want me to buy one or more of the 3000, $100 raffle tickets. And they are really trying to get me, it's to raise money for the Diabetes Foundation.

Don't say if it's manual or PDK. If I knew it was PDK might donate $100 to Diabetes Foundation for a 1 in 3000 chance.

If they sell all the tickets that's $300,000 for at $95,000 car.

These were just numbers.

On my keyboard an uppercase 4 is $ and a bunch of uppercase numbers in a row looks like a cartoon curse word.

Funny, that is what popped into my head when I read the statement.

We had another flight yesterday. Back to my "regular" pilot. He had minor hand surgery a few weeks ago. He had a cyst removed from his pinky finger. They had his hand all bandaged up to prevent him from using his hand for a while and to keep it protected from a bump. All is well again. With his hand bandaged up he did not feel like it was wise for him to haul the fuel hose to the top of the wing to refuel the airplane. It was my first time to fill er up. The gas pump handle end is bigger than a silver dollar. Gas come rocketing out. You can imaging needed 40 gallons of fuel and not wanting to take all day. The gas is blue, to let you know if you have a leak. If you see blue streaks on a wing or anyplace at all, it most likely indicated a fuel leak. No leaks for us.

We only needed $105 worth of gas. Bargain price. Sundance airport is know nation wide as a cheap place for gas. Just $4.10 per gallon for 100 low lead.

It's Morning...

Another sunless Fall day. Prognosis livable but not especially joyful here. Hoping your day is more positive.

Porsche-poor 10-24-2018 06:04 AM

morning. got the "greys" to huh. That will be the next few months for us.

GH85Carrera 10-24-2018 06:15 AM

Yea, today some of the rain from the Hurricane coming in from the Pacific over Mexico still comes to Oklahoma. It is supposed to rain this evening, and finish up tomorrow morning and be back to normal. I really need to wash the El Camino. Not gonna do it today.

Porsche-poor 10-24-2018 06:19 AM

don't blame you there. I'm sure the boss and his wife can come up with something to keep you busy.
