This was the first shakedown for my Philmont Trek in June. Shakedowns are about getting to know your crew and getting familiar with the gear for the newbs. My crew is 10 total, 8 youth and 2 adults. The other adult is an older MD and seems like a nice enough guy. But they are all LDS, and the LDS troops tend to have a reputation in scouting....

Dad helped my uncle move this out of storage for a neighbor of my uncles. It doesnt run, and hasn't been tagged since '91. The owners hubby was messing with it but has passed. Dad says it is almost pristine, and shows ~30k on the clock. It doesn't run, has the timing covers off.... I'm going to swing by and look at it, if it can be bought right I want it....

A 1977 Martini 924! I don't care that its a Audi 4 banger, these were cool little cars....

The shakedown went OK. My crew isn't too bad, except for the fact that they are all Mormons.... Not sure yet if that will cause a problem, time will tell....

Sweet. The chicks (they're all blonde) won't mind you dating multiple girls at once.

nynor 02-20-2011 07:03 PM

have fun with that....

porsche4life 02-20-2011 07:05 PM

The mormons, or the toofah?

nynor 02-20-2011 07:06 PM

that audi four banger is a solid little motor with a porsche head on it. i had a 924 and loved it. it was easy and cheap to work on. non-interference motor. most parts can be sourced VW. it handled super well and did 120MPH, no problem.

porsche4life 02-20-2011 07:07 PM

If it can be bought right it should be fun for a bit, it appears to be clean enough to be worth the effort too....

draw your own conclusions.

porsche4life 02-20-2011 07:14 PM

You've spent more time around them... Anything I should be worried about on a 10 day trek?

nynor 02-20-2011 07:16 PM

i don't want to spoil if for you.

porsche4life 02-20-2011 07:17 PM

What a pal.....

nynor 02-20-2011 07:28 PM

the truth: i grew up mormon. unfortunately, most of my experience is with utah mormons, even though i am not from utah, originally. mormons outside of utah are much more tolerant. you may be okay.

porsche4life 02-20-2011 07:34 PM

My only cause for concern is this....

We were supposed to camp Saturday night, leave sunday morning... I get there Sat morning and the contingent coordinator is asking me if my other crew advisor sent me an email, I'm like no.... Apparently my crew came in and stayed Fri night so they could leave when we finished up Sat evening so they could make church on Sunday. Not a big deal, but considering I sent them all an email earlier in the week, they could have replied back with this plan. Part of these shakedowns is giving us time to get to know each other.....

nynor 02-20-2011 07:44 PM

that treatment sounds about right. passive aggressive and little acknowledgment that others may not share their ideology and idiosyncrasies.

porsche4life 02-20-2011 07:45 PM

Oh well, as long as they don't try to convert me I will be fine... I am going to Philmont again more for me than anyone else.... I intend to hike towards the back and enjoy the views....

nynor 02-20-2011 07:48 PM

herein lies your other problem: you are the ONLY one in the group that is not mormon, mob rules and they don't care that you have a problem with the above behavior. you are the outsider and don't matter one wit. they may say or behave otherwise to your face, but you are not of the tribe.

porsche4life 02-20-2011 07:50 PM

Like I said, no biggee to me... I've been an outsider all my life... As long as they are cordial, I can deal.... We have several more events together to make sure it will work, if they start treating me like crap, I am very close to the contigent coordinator, he will fix the issue(aka put me on another crew)

nynor 02-20-2011 08:10 PM

if i were you, seriously, i would make that happen now. it won't get better. i promise. what they did is a SERIOUS breach of etiquette and it didn't even register to them. trust me on this.

Geronimo '74 02-20-2011 08:32 PM

Morning guys,

Good luck with that Sid....
I would take nynor's advice on this...
The ten day trip should be fun for you too...

pete3799 02-20-2011 09:17 PM

Morning G
Hows your head?

slodave 02-20-2011 09:21 PM

Mormon's don't try and convert you until you are dead, then they do it whether you wanted them to or not.
