A Troll from the Past Warns: Pelican August Wine Tour Beware!

Just when you think a troll has disappeared or reformed . . . he is obviously still carrying a massive chip on his shoulder . . .
"The August 14th "Pelican Wine Tour" the weekend of the Laguna Seca Porsche
historics plans a drive south on Carmel Valley Road (G16) to essentially HWY 101,
a distance of about 50 - 60 miles to the winery. This road is basically a one lane
road for two way traffic in many parts and as such is very dangerous. Besides this,
the road is very rough with many blind corners. The road for even a good sport bike
motorcycle rider can be challenging and dangerous with dirt & rocks on the road.
A safer drive to the winery is to drive east on Hwy 68 and then south on 101.

Bottom line: Avoid the drive or drive extremely carefully avoiding those that consider
the drive a 'fast rally' to the end."

I never considered Loren a troll, certainly opinionated, and sometimes abrasive, but not a troll.

As to the route, frankly, I think he has a valid concern.

There is a map of that road, and some photos here: http://www.bigpenguin.org/?p=14

If you drive carefully, you'll be fine.

Not a troll? I beg to disagree. He thread stalked me here & on Rennlist & sent an abusive email to me which I gleefully posted on my site here. He managed to get some great threads locked along the way. If it talks like a troll, and acts like a troll . . .

But, he may have a a point. Someone want to use Google Maps and see what the deal is? Most roads I see on Google maps that don't have a line painted in the center are tedious roads indeed. When Dave at TRE chooses such roads, he preruns every one a week or so before he turns anyone loose.

There is a road up north near the coast, 'Mountain View' rd.

It has between 10-15 turns per minute for about an hour! ( depending on your speed )
That's tedious.

I'm very familiar with Carmel Valley Road and Arroyo Seco Road. This poster may be confusing them with Nascimiento-Ferguson Road further to the south. The Pelican Tour route is pretty low-key. It gets a bit narrow crossing over from Carmel Valley to the Salinas Valley above Greenfield, but nothing to get uptight about if you're used to country roads. With all the car-shows on Friday the fuzz will be out in force, so there will be no reason to drive much over 8-tenths anyway. It's a tour, not a race. The MHAR entrant who I was going to crew for pulled his car, so I'm going to sign-up for this event right now...

I looked at the map and pictures of that road - looks AWESOME!!!! But I think the suggestion to drive carefully and stay out of the way of the hot-shoes is a good point. Frankly, that is generally a good idea on any road that you've never driven before in your life which would be the case for most of us out-of-towners.

We have roads like that around here and I offer similar advice. I don't mean anything bad by it, just dont' want my friends to get hurt. Have fun, yes - get hurt - no.

I took the Carmel Valley Road 2 years ago on a m/c after motorcycle magazines had highly touted it on more than one occassion.

My assessment of the road is: Very pretty and interesting. A road to take your time and see the sights.

Not a road to race on or try to beat the clock. Just too many blind areas, a little gravel, cobby pavement and narrow at times.......

Not trying to be negative, just take your time and enjoy the drive....

Wayne, just so you know... in a tour like this, the car that leads the first group is expected to be sporting mudflaps as a courtesy to those who are following.

I'm sure you've already got 'em on the car, and they look great.

isn't this all just a repressed urge to go hillclimbing?!

sure those Aussies and Brits might not have figured out which side the steering wheel belongs on but at least they know how to organize a proper hillclimb/tarmac rally!!!

One more reason to join the tour

SOLEDAD, Calif. -- Alabama's ban of a wine featuring a nude nymph on the label could produce a financial windfall for the California vintner in Soledad.
The Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board recently sent a letter to stores and restaurants, telling them to quit serving Cycles Gladiator wine because of the nude nymph on the label.
Bill Leigon, president of Hahn Family Wines said Thursday that visits to the company's Web site have increased tenfold since news of the ban broke late last week. He said callers from across the country have been inquiring about where they can buy the wine.
He is preparing store displays that said "Banned in Bama" and he's anticipating a significant increase in sales.
Leigon said the wine had remained available in Alabama after the label was rejected last year because he was unaware of the rejection. He said that when the ABC Board's letter went out, all the wine was picked up from stores and restaurants.
The problem with the label were first reported by the Mobile Press-Register.
Leigon could change the label and resume sales in Alabama, but he said he won't.
"It is a gorgeous piece of work," he said.

So how much does it cost to be second in line in the first group? It would be awesome to spend all day chasing down a 959.

As a followup - assuming you haven't followed the post linked above, Loren obviously reported my somewhat snide remark to the mods . . .

The response from John D:

Hi Loren,

Thanks for reporting this thread - but before I admonish anyone - I have to ask a quick clarification?

First - are you intending to rate all driving events and their road selections in Southern California? Or are you intending to give them the "LorenFB" Safety Chair Thumbs UP or Thumbs DOWN nationwide? Since I also host/run the OCR regions mailing list - I have not seen you proffer your opinion on that list? I'm pretty certain PCA OCR does events as well - but perhaps I missed your wise and sage "BEWARE" warnings?

Second - as you certainly don't drive that road due to it's "unsafe" condition, perhaps you should volunteer to Wayne to assist him with route planning next year? Given your efforts and warnings - I'm certain all will be "Loren Safe" - at least in your opinion?

Third - I've known Wayne and PelicanParts for - I dun'no? - About a dozen years?? Maybe more.. The single and ONLY "unsafe" drive Wayne EVER did - was alone. In a 914.... Uphill. About 100 feet from his house. Something about testing whether CV bolts.... Aww - nevermind - it's a private story..

Loren - I have absolutely no idea why you posted what you did - and then presume it was OK to use the "reported thread"...

If you have any concerns about any Pelican Event - ask Wayne.

IMNSHO - if anyone looks like a jerk in this thread - that would be you, Loren. Why you posted it in the first place is beyond me - unless you had an alternative agenda (see my comments about your new, self-proclaimed "Safety Chair" above, OK?).

As an aside, Loren. Next time you promote yourself, your business - or attempt a "veiled" threat on another business - I will personally ban you. I am also removing your avatar and your SIG. In short - you have dissed other businesses over the years - and I for one - am tired of it. You knew the rules while I owned this site and you and I traded a lot of private and public messages about the same.

For as much has changed - for you, Loren - all is unchanged.

To Wayne & PelicanParts.. I am sorry Loren's post even appears here. I'm guessing he has no where else to post it...???

John

So I guess I wasn't the only one who felt that he was trolling . . .

Loren's just a nut. He can't help it. I think it's a genetic problem with engineers. They just aren't normal.

I usually found his posts "enlightening" if somewhat blunt.
