What licensing/insurance do you need for a car delivery business?
I've got the truck (F-250 PSD) and the enclosed trailer (Royal Cargo). A friend of mine thinks there is some opportunity for me to make some spare money hauling exotic cars on the weekends.
Anyone on the forum doing this? What licenses/insurance would be needed? I'm talking hauling one/two cars or motorcycles....strictly high end stuff with door-to-door service. Thoughts? |

AFAIK: You will need both a DOT registration and a Motor Carrier registration since you will be hauling freight in interstate commerce. You will need liability insurance appropriate to the freight business, as well as physical damage insurance and contents insurance. As a sole proprietor, you probably will not need workers comp. If there is any chance a customer will EVER step foot onto your trailer, you will need liability insurance for that also.
You may also need a commercial drivers license.

I was offered $500 and a plane ticket home a few years ago to deliver a 968 to Arkansas.
As I explored the liability issue, it became clear that I wouldn't be covered under anyone's policy (mine, the buyer, or the seller) and if the car was damaged in any way, the buyer could rightfully sue me. I decided that $500 wasn't worth the risk.

I checked on the CDL and I don't believe that I need one since the weight class is covered by my normal license and I am not carrying passengers for hire. Insurance is a given...the DOT piece would be an interesting wrinkle |

Yes but you are carrying commercial freight. A CDL would be needed.
