How is the 401 doing?

All those cheap buys at the beginning and during the down days seem to be paying off for anyone too? I bought as many units as I could during the slide. Holding at around 12% currently, but who knows?

What 401?

Lost over 60%. Cashed out what was left to survive the current layoff. Sucks.

Craig: You're a smart guy. I did the same 7 or 8 years ago when I was still working and contributing.

In the past year, my balance dropped almost 100K, but recovered about 23K of that in the past quarter.

Yesterday I looked up my projections from three years ago. The current balance is within 1% of that projection. I was however, very conservative and had little in the way of equities or real estate related investments when the "bottom fell out". I continue to contribute up the maximum of my employer match. I feel the key is not to be too greedy in expectations for returns; my target was/is 1 to 2% above the inflation rate.

Wife and I both retired in 2004 and configured 401K's/IRAS's to be approx. 50% equities and 50% CD's, Bonds, etc. Equities took a serious 6 figure hit but have recovered quite a bit the last couple of months but a long way to go yet. We have never tried to time the market so took the full hit but have also not missed any of the recovery. My concern is this is a short term bull rally it a bear market. I may move some more out of equities into cash positions.

Eventually the piper is going to have to be paid by inflation or deflation !!
