bought an Iphone today

The wifes cell phone was starting to fall apart and having issues so she bugged me to go look at phones. So today we went to AT&T and looked at a crap load of phones.::o Anyway we looked at the entry level Iphone and for the price we were impressed. We walked away with two of them with bluetooth earsets, carrying cases and both home and car chargers. I was really surprised how easy these are to use. Took me 10 minutes of playing around and I had my email setup and was surfing Pelican Parts.:D I'm 51 so I probably don't fit the normal demographics for these but it's quite a toy ! Our youngest son has had one for a few years so he can teach us a few things.;) Seems like people either love these or hate them.......so far I'm in love.:D

they got a lot cheaper than the first ones out, didn't they?

HardDrive 08-01-2009 05:34 PM

Just wait until you see all the free (or very cheap) applications that you can download. Some amazing stuff out there.

My only beef is the spelling auto correct feature. Sometimes when you are typing quickly, It can come up with some absurd spelling suggestions, and make the change before you even have a chance to tell it not to.

Are they available unlocked (i.e. any provider you want) yet?

No. ATT contract is up later this year. Still need to jailbreak it.

I can see how the iphone trumps all competitors if you're using it for passing the time / entertainment if you just need casual communication tools and not a serious multitask / biz machine.

Apple has the largest 3rd party support hands down-- everyone has an iphone app. Everyone is a distant 2nd in that department. That alone is worth the price of admission if you see a phone as more of a toy vs. tool.

On that note, I rock a Blackberry Bold with a 16G card to do all my business stuff, multitask anything, anytime, anywhere.

3G from an iPhone will not work on T-Mobil. T-Mobil uses different spectrum for 3G, and the iPhone wasn't designed for it.

Palm and Windows Mobile I expect have a lot more applications.

The auto correct can be turned off if it's driving you crazy.

I think you will love the apps. People act like tge touch makes it difficult when in reality it much easier than say tge trackball on a blackberry

I just discovered Pandora for the phone.

Music application that seeks out music based on your criteria and streams that type of music to you.

Wow.

Was a website before an app... Still is. =)

Jailbreak your iPhone and Pandora can play in the background while doing everything else like surfing this forum.

My work IT department at work tells me that they can't get the i-phone to work with our computer system so I can get my work e-mails - the new blackberry works but not he i-phone.
Is this a known problem or are they just being lazy?

Depends. What mail system are they using?

Can someone explain the term " jailbreak " the phone? And where is the easiest place to search for apps ? Do I do that from Apple? Just starting to learn about this tool so sorry for the simple questions.

Scooter 08-02-2009 03:43 PM

Jailbreak will open your phone to non-approved (by Apple) apps and allow you to use the phone on other networks. It basically unbundles your phone from Apple and AT&T. Technically, it should void your warranty and breach your contract with Apple/AT&T.

Search Apps from the App Store icon on your phone.

gr8fl4porsche 08-02-2009 07:07 PM

Partially correct about Jailbreaking.

Jailbreaking allows you to install apps that are not approved by Apple.

Unlocking allows you to use the phone on other networks.

You can Jailbreak without Unlocking.

No real warranty worries with Jailbreaking, since all you have to do before getting any warranty work done is to restore the phone with itunes.

It is simply a software modification that allows you to use another app store called Cydia.

Do a search for Purplera1n if you are interested. A quick software download, 1 click, reboot phone and you are done.
