iPhone dock & stereo connection
 

anybody know of a cheap little stand (dock) that will recharge an iPhone and also connect it into the stero system at the same time?

Define cheap. They sell a JBL unit at the Apple stores that has a really nice sound. About $150.

Connect it to an external stereo system?
Which iPhone do you have? The charging cradle that came with my 3g has a headphone-style line out...

Lots of products on the market. I have been using a Dynex branded dock from Bestbuy for years with an ipod. Works perfectly and was only $20. Charges, line out, audio and video with optional remote.
It will play the iphone just not charge it.

Just make sure the product is rated for the 3G or 3GS iphone (whichever you have) not just ipod - there is a voltage difference in the charging system.

do you have to plug in a sep. jack w/those things?

or does sitting the iPhone in the cradle do the whole she-bang?

The back of the cradle has two receptacles:
One for the sync/charging USB cable that came with the iphone
The other for line out

Both are made active when the iphone is placed in the cradle, so yeah, sitting does the whole she-bang.
