The very first car ad, ergo the very first car salesman, had to resort to misrepresentation to sell his product.

The more things change . . .

masraum 08-04-2009 08:48 AM

Wow, the car sounds very exciting! (I'm sure back then it probably was)

dd74 08-04-2009 09:52 AM

Very cool. Is that late 1800s? How much would $1K during that time be today?

cstreit 08-04-2009 10:22 AM

Oooo... and Ball bearings too. Everything is ball-bearings these days. :D

Tidybuoy 08-04-2009 10:25 AM

I wonder how they define "lightly constructed"? Thin cast iron.....

billwagnon 08-04-2009 10:36 AM

That "No Asians" thing goes way back too.

trekkor 08-04-2009 11:02 AM

"No odor. No vibration"

They still have yet to get that one figured out...

I believe it's "No Agents"

dd74 08-04-2009 12:21 PM

Lol!

RWebb 08-04-2009 01:26 PM

it is from 1898

I like the "hydrocarbon motor" inducement. IIRC, they were also pushing steam engines and electric cars back then. I guess the circle really is unbroken, by and by.

RWebb 08-04-2009 01:33 PM

dunno re value of $1k in 1898, but the CPI Index of 100 in 1982 dollars were worth only 9.80 in 1913...

today that 100 index is at 215...

so if I do this right 100/9.8 = 10.2
then 2.15 * 10.2 = ~~22

so that would be a $22k car today if it cost that much in 1913

for 1898, I dunno

also, the CPI is not always what you want to compare; but it is what we got...

I think it was on the History Channel where it was explained that from the late 1800s through to about The Teens or Twenties, there were hundreds of car companies in America. It was sort of like the dot.com boom, particularly with a very high attrition rate.

RWebb 08-04-2009 02:33 PM

so... now we see an ad saying "Desirable Asians wanted"

no, wait -- that isn't it...

azasadny 08-04-2009 05:17 PM

We had an electric car company in my hometown and there are a few surviving cars... i believe the very early cars ran on alcohol, not refined petroleum...

dd74 08-05-2009 12:01 AM

Diesel (Rudolph) first diesel ran on peanut oil, IIRC.

These days, it's said if one melts enough computer cases into liquid and stick it in their diesel, that too will run the engine.

Kerosene is a no-brainer.

I recently read somewhere that Chrysler's turbine car at one time ran on tequila. SmileWavy
