I had a 1961 crew-cab many years ago.
I put a 2110cc in it. I miss that one. KT |

very cool!

I like the hand crank:cool:
|
Regarding the underside - I did not have it on a rack, but all the poking and prodding I could do produced no rot - surprisingly. Like I said, I think it has good bones. What I am trying to decide is there any upside for me if I basically write a check to paint it and buy new/redoen seats.

If you plan on keeping it - yes. Just make sure you get the correct bits - there's a lot of crap out there. This will help protect your investment. |

I saw this thread and thought some of you might like to see this one I spotted a few weeks back:;)

I'd ask on The Samba also.

I don't think you will find anyone who knows a VW bus better than widebody911, see if he is close enough to check it out with you, you should try and get him too...

The problem with asking on TheSamba is you'll show your hand, and some flipper will swoop in, if for no other reason that to fcuk up the deal.
|
I've wanted one of those Westy trailers for a while...

I had lots of these since the early 70s. I have a 64 21 window deluxe right now. And you know these and the standards have been appreciating in value. If the van is indeed a CA rust free example and all the mechanicals are as described $5K would be good value. Even @ $6K and you "gotta have it" you will probably be able OK if you can throw the interior in yourself.
It does have the 'slash' rear bumper, which is getting difficult to find. The correct middle seat will go for $500 to $1000+. The noses are like the Ghias and prone to getting punched. The doors should all open and close w/o problems. The front door latches and hinges are prone to wearing out. Be sure to check all the rust prone areas on a lift (dog legs, rockers, etc). These things can rust in some weird areas if exposed to salt air for lengthy time period. If you can jack it up with the factory jack post w/o crunching, that's a good sign. If the seller won't do that for or let it up on a lift I would say "thank you very much" and run. My 29c from the Ohio rust belt. |
I got a ride in a early 70s BayWindow this morning, it had a 89 3.2 in it with four wheel disk and super suspension, it was fast and fun. I didn't have my camera with me or it would be on here now. I think I will see it again this Sunday though.
Just an option if stock isn't your thing. |
Even though I am out of state he called me and asked if I thought it was worth $7K...
|
Here is the one with the 89 3.2 in it. Four wheel disk and all new suspension

Before you even consider handing over money for it get it up on a hoist. I bet there is considerable rust underneath. The interiour tidy up is the least of your problems.

Good advise I am sure.
