Part of the job you used to love but now hate

I used to love the travel that came with the job but now I can't stand it, 28 hours to get to work, it sucks, this will be the reason I leave this job.

GH85Carrera 08-07-2009 05:56 AM

Wow, 28 hours of travel must suck. I guess I am very fortunate. The only part of my job I hate is archiving all the jobs we fly. Everything gets scanned and the film is put away for long term storage. Our company has been in business since 1947 so we have a large aerial film archive. Now I have to archive the digital data and the film. It is not particularly hard just tedious. It was fun when I started.

Back in college, computers were a "new" thing and when I graduated, they were just starting to enter the workplace as a tool. The fact I was proficient with them and kind of a "techno-geek" went very far and helped me quite a bit. Now computers are like azzholes - everyone has one and they largely generate the same output. The stupidity of society-at-large has caught up with the computer and the Internet in a big way. It's no longer novel, interesting, a challenge or exciting. It's drudgery, boring and has destroyed a lot of the personal interaction that used to exist.

One thing I REALLY like about the new job I'm taking is - NO FRIKKIN' AUTOCAD! I can't wait!

I use my computer now for e-mail, web browsing (incl. Pelican), paying bills and my flight simulator. That's about it.

I rather draw on AutoCad or Microstation instead of on tracing or vellum. Hate the lead that gets on your fingers when you use mechanical pencil. LOL

Porsche-O-Phile 08-07-2009 06:37 PM

After chucking lines in ACAD for the last 15 or so years, it's lost its appeal. I'll be doing mostly management/contracting/specification stuff, which is just fine by me. If I never have to draw another line in Autocad again, I'll be a happy man - which is how it's looking.

I do agree that pencil on vellum is a pain though (yes, I started doing that, ink-on-mylar, etc.) Drafting in any form just sucks due to the tedium after a while.

AutoCAD just makes copy/pasting details far too tempting for drafters and hour-whipped job captains, so the errors promulgate themselves over and over and over, job after job. The computer just allows people to make the same mistakes over and over, faster and with more efficiency. I know, BTDT. I'm not saying "back to the horse and buggy", but there certainly are some drawbacks to technology - it ain't a silver bullet by any means in the profession.

They're not all that different...

But I agree with the sentiment. I could probably tell you in great detail the route from the terminal to the National counter in damn near 20 major metro airports. Used to think it was cool, then I started doing it for a living. No skymiles perks or hotel points makes up for the time lost with the family.

Working out the problems that arise in completing the projects. I just want to do the job and move on, I don't seem to enjoy the process anymore.

Buying and selling guns isn't as much fun as it used to be, unless it's one I'm going to keep for myself.

I hate people now. I used to love new customers / clients / people in general, the last 10 years have made me a very bitter person.

I have to deal with people now, and I have set it up with my company where all we have to do is exchange e-mails. I like that a lot, the dreaded phone call tha tI have to take will ruin my day.

svandamme 08-08-2009 02:31 PM

i still hate the same things about work, that i hated when i started the work.
aka, the work.

i'de rather be loaded, to the point where i don't have to work, and can just wake up on a work day... and just opt-out...

let's face it, having good co-workers just means nothing... It just means they are decent enough to have aroud..
And if your are rich, you can just make those co-workers become "crew", and have them around, doing not to much, basically pay em enough so they don't need to get a job elsewhere, where they would be someone elses co-worker, leaving you to have other dolts to deal with...
