One weird fact from the movie...the house used in the movie was the Frat house of Sgt. Don Malarkey of "Band of Brothers" fame.

guess he was a Sigma Nu??, there's something in that book, Easy Co. Soldier

here are some tidbits on the film:

Dexter Lake Club, the venue where Otter, Boon, Flounder and Pinto found their favorite music group, Otis Day and the Knights, singing "Shama Lama Ding Dong." The 1978 film was shot throughout Lane County, but the club near the lake with the neon sign is one of the most recognizable locations. Now the 50-plus-year-old building, which in recent years has served as a diner and floral shop, is on the market with an asking price of $259,000.

For the most part, shooting was one big party, says Wilson, who recalls the late author Ken Kesey, the Merry Pranksters and musician Robert Cray being on set.
A former Eugene resident, Cray played the role of the bassist for Otis Day and the Knights. Kesey, a resident of Pleasant Hill, was reportedly a fan and a friend of Cray's.
"We just had so much fun," Wilson recalls. "That was back in the day when film was fun and creative."
The final scene in "Animal House" was shot at the same time as the Dexter Lake Club sequences. The character of Bluto (John Belushi) and Mandy the sorority girl (Mary Louise Weller) drive off into the sunset in a convertible, and Dexter Lake can be seen in the background.

Toga Party in Cottage Grove, Sept. 3

Exterior was a trashed out frat. house on 11th that was later knocked down

the motorcycle scene was filmed using the staircase in the foyer of Sigma Nu, UO campus

mock homecoming parade and other scenes filmed in downtown Cottage Grove

dilapidated prison halfway house that served as the "Animal House" exterior was torn down in 1986

The Dexter Lake Club (East of Eugene), where Bluto and the boys tangled with local toughs, is now Demeter's Cafe. The former bar is now a craft boutique. But owner Sherrie Sims says the neon sign immortalized in the film still lights up.

exterior of the Sigma Nu house, for instance, served as the sorority where John Belushi's "Bluto" character climbed a ladder to window peep at half-clad co-eds. Also recognizable are UO dormitories and athletic fields, the EMU "fishbowl," Knight Library and Johnson Hall.

Also still intact is the downtown Cottage Grove building - then the Holloman Ford car dealership - where a runaway parade float crashed through the wall and into a car on the showroom floor -- the crew framed a fake front into a rollup door

A lot of interesting facts about the movie on the web. I have the Anniversary DVD and they mention that during filming the cast was split up in hotels between the 2 fraternities to "bond".

Another really interesting fact is the offer made to Donald Sutherland that he turned down. He could of made a LOT of money.

"Belushi received only $35,000 for Animal House, with a bonus after it became a hit. Landis also met with Meat Loaf in case Belushi did not want to play Bluto. Landis worked with Belushi on his character; they decided that Bluto was a cross between Harpo Marx and the Cookie Monster. Despite Belushi's presence, Universal wanted another movie star because they said that the whole movie did not have a star, just a lot of sub-plots. Landis had been a crew member on Kelly's Heroes and had become friends with actor Donald Sutherland (he even used to babysit his son Kiefer). To address Universal's misgivings, Landis called up Sutherland, one of the biggest stars of the 1970s, and asked him to be in the film. He ended up becoming the highest-paid member of the cast. For two days work, Sutherland was initially offered $35,000. He told Landis that Universal had to do better than that. Universal then offered him $35,000 and 15% of the film's gross, assuming that the movie would be quickly forgotten. Sutherland wanted sure money and settled for $50,000, a decision which (by his own admission) has cost him millions."
