Need Buying Advice on Duc Chain & Sprockets

The chain broke on my 93/98 900SS today, not surprised and should have replaced it when we did the motor ('98) earlier this year.

I've heard about various gearing scenarios and chains. I'm keeping the bike forever and have been replacing parts with either factory or best possible aftermarket as I go, so I'm looking for similar upgrades with sprockets and a chain. In terms of gearing, I'm leaning more toward acceleration than comfort around town.

Any other "while you are in there" things I should consider?

Case saver insert. It goes by the front countershaft sprocket to protect the cases if a chain breaks. I think you can order them from DesmoTimes.

Good info:

While "you're in there"???????? You don't go in far to change a chain/sprockets. Maybe consider if it's time for a rear tire or wheel bearings.......

Like the thread above, go up two in the rear and stock on front.

I got a rude awakening when I was a Ducati mechanic in 1993. I was on a test ride on a customer's 900SS. I pulled on to the feeder road in front of an 18 wheeler and wanted to make sure I was out of the way so I gave it full throttle. I didn't realize the customer had gone up two teeth on rear. I'm not a wheelie guy, but I was that day

I'm curious: we used to get a lot of front brake vibration on the 900SS when they first came out. Do you notice any vibration and are all the front brake components stock?

Thanks for the info guys.

David, I have slight vibration in the front. Not even close to bad enough to warrant consideration, bikes fast and troublefree, but added to the punchlist this winter. the front is all stock I believe.

yesterday was a good day for me on the bike. I felt very comfortable going very fast, I'm definitely building skill while riding.

We tried a few things for the vibration, but oddly, the thing that made the most difference was changing the brake hose.

now that is interesting. Curious... did you switch to stainless braid? I'm wondering with the original hose as the source of the vibration is the firmer SS less subject to vibrating.

The brake line made no sense, but it helped more than changing disks. We never fully solved it because my boss told me to quit messing with it and wait for Ducati to tell us what to do. I quit shortly after my boss and I butted heads over this and decided it was time to pursue an engineering degree.
