I have a newer mother board I installed into an old case and installed Win2KPro and brought it up, because that's the only install disk that I have. Recently, I bought a SATA 640 gig drive and installed it. The bios sees the drive, but I can't bring it up in Windows. What do I have to do to get it into Win2K? And if it needs a new Operating System, should I go with XP (which is on my other Desktop) or Vista (which is on my laptop)

2000 and XP do not contain drivers for SATA drives. SATA is newer than the OS's. You have to install them. When you are installing the OS a window pops up asking if you want to install any third party drivers, that is when you can use a thumb drive or disc to add the drivers.

Not true about 2000 and XP and SATA. 2000 may be an issue with the newest mb's though. You can also create a driver disk and hit F6 at the begging of the install and load any current SATA drivers.

I should have been more specific. Old versions of XP do not contain SATA drivers.

I have an original copy that I still use that did not contain SATA drivers so I slipstreamed in the drivers and made a new copy. Modern versions of XP, especially versions which contain SP1 and SP2, may have the proper drivers.

Another option is to make a new windows 2000 cd that contains the needed S-ATAA/AHCI drivers. Handy little utility can do this called "nlite." (vlite for vista)

I always try and slip the drivers and service packs I need into my OS media, just so much easier. I never have to try and locate a floppy or disks anymore.
