Anybody here with a Dodge Diesel PKU?

Just got a call from a logger friend...he's on fire watch for his timber company, meaning lots of slow crawling in his Dodge 4X4 Pickemup. Check engine light came on..."see your dealer". His is a 2007 with the 7.0 liter diesel. So, he called the dealer, was told he needed to replace his "exhaust filter"...and was told that if you drive too slowly over 20% of the time you ruin the exhaust filter?

Uh...believe me, the roads he cruises while on fire watch, you do not want to drive anything BUT slowly...just idle along.

So, what the hell is an exhaust filter? I never heard of such a thing.

After warranty, can he just install a bypass pipe, then reinstall this filter when he sells the rig?

I told him I'd check the wisdom of this board, would get back to him...

The 07s are a 6.7l with a particulate filter. Bunch of EPA crap! They plug up and can burn the turbo up. Supposedly there is a bypass kit but IDK what that costs. His should still have the 100k engine warranty.

Some new diesels have a catalytic converter, some have particulate filters, some have both...

Bet the code goes away if he gets some highway miles on the truck....

My friends new F350 PSD has a light on the dash that illuminates when the particulate filter is being cleaned..

I have an 07 6.7L, and you DO have to drive the **** out of them every now and then. If you don't, the variable vane turbo doesn't move enough, and can get clogged/stuck, and burn out the turbo. Replacement is the only option.

There are also known issues with the air intake pre-heater which will throw a check engine light.

See all of this is why my dad spent months hunting down a low miles 06 with the 5.9. It runs like a striped assed ape and doesn't have all these problems.

Assuming it is 4x4 tell him to put it in 4 low and a lower gear and get those revs up. It takes heat to help clear out those particulate filters.

Must be like the 993 problem with the air injection. Never a problem in Germany, where they actually use the 282 horsepower, as opposed to idling in the Starbuck parking lot.

We have an 09 Peterbuilt. Though a different vehicle, you'll love this crap:

Quote:
In order to meet 2007 EPA engine emission requirements, vehicles will have an exhaust After-Treatment System (ATS) which includes a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), Regeneration switch and warning lights. The DPF will trap soot from the engine exhaust gases.

The ATS will clean the DPF by using hot exhaust gases normally generated by the engine. This typically occurs during highway operation. This is referred to as a "Passive" Regeneration and is transparent to the operation of the vehicle.

The ATS may not be able to clean the DPF when the vehicle is driven at extended low speeds or with frequent start and stops. In such cases, warning lights and indicator symbols will alert the operator to take action.
So if you have extended idle time (such as in a truckstop overnight, or in the woods) your DPF temps are too low to burn off the particulates - meaning a clogged DPF.

And even though the Pete has a system that is supposed to monitor the DPF and automatically raise exhaust temps to compensate, we have already had to have a DPF replaced in less than a year.

And DPF =/= catalytic converter

Again, many thinks...sending a link to this thread to Lonnie's wife. Hopefully, she'll read all to him the next time he calls home.

(edit) Guess this means a diesel should be off the list if you're going to cruise many logging roads in a 4X4...
