THIS AIRPLANE WAS AT THE NIAGARA FALLS AIRPORT RECENTLY (TWICE) TO LOAD COMPRESSORS TO FLY DIRECTLY TO SAUDI ARABIA 32 wheels! -- Cost's more than my house to rotate the tires! The World's Biggest Airplane, the Russian Antonov 225. Attached pics are of the Russian Behemoth when it came into Medford , OR , to pick up two Sikorsky fire fighting helicopters To take overseas -- $1,000,000 to transport them. While they were loading the helicopters, the Russian pilots (two crews), went into town to buy cigarettes by the case and Levis jeans. It is amazing something this huge can stay in The air. I love the fact it has real gauges too. Must be intense to fly.

I toured that thing several years ago when it came for an airshow in Oklahoma City. It just amazing that something that big can fly.
The Russians love to point out they have the biggest airplane in the world. Last I heard there were only three of them that were airworthy. |

Spruce Goose never flew across the globe carrying trucks. In fact I'm not certain that it ever really flew more than a few feet off the surface.

When Pepsi put a bottling plant in Russia, they actually built the plant in the US.
Then it was loaded, complete, into the Antonov and flown to Russia. Yes to the Soviet Shuttle mockup in the first pic. It was actually designed specifically for that purpose, including the dual vertical tail, so the tail would be out of the air shadow of the shuttle. The 'domes' on top of the body at the wings are actually covering the attachment points for the shuttle. Their shuttle was dropped as the country imploded. |

the one that flies now was mothballed as well, then they unmothballed it and refurbed it after it had been parked outside in russian climate for a decade or so... supposedly they are now thinking about unmothballing #2 because #1 is permanently fully booked...
I wonder what insurance companies charge to insure a big expensive load carried onboard something made in the USSR, aged and refurbed... I bet you can buy a very nice 917 with premium... |
Also, the engines vibrate significantly more than we are used to here in the West.
There are maintenance tunnels in the wings and mechanics have to go through the wings tightening the bolts that attach the engines to the wings after every flight. |
man if that damn thing ever landed at this aeropuerto...........it would be sunk up to its struts because of not enough concrete on the runway!
how much damn concrete thickness does that damn thing need?????? dear amerikansky runway owners.........we need a 8' deep runway thats 2 miles long to land this! |
The Antonov 124 is a bit smaller version 4-engine transport that regularly lands in Denver to carry complete rockets (Titan?) from Lockheed-Martin here to Cape Canaveral.
It was the largest aircraft before the Antonov 225. |
