Stumped on computer network issue
I'm at a loss on this one. Client calls yesterday and reports that one workstation out of five cannot connect to the Internet, but can connect to the LAN server and can run the proprietary SW from the server. I was also remotely able to log into the server and from there, into the workstation that is having the issue. I was able to run some AV stuff and everything came back clean. DNS resolves correctly.
I tired plugging in the offending the computer into a spare port on the switch, but same problem. Another strange thing, is that I cannot log into the router from any computer using the local address. About to reset the router and see what happens. Nothing to report in the logs on the computer regarding HW errors. Hijackthis does not show anything either.... In the mean time, anyone have any brilliant ideas? Thanks! |
OK, fixed. Router decided flip out. Reset the router and things seem to be working again.

What kind of router?

Advise client to budget for a new router in the near future.
In my experience, random router errors that are fixed by rebooting are usually followed by a bricked router. |
It sounds like a possible nat issue. If the timeout on the port address translations. If they are too long you can run out of available ports to PAT through.
Resetting the router would have reset all of those connections and got you back to normal. |
It's a Netgear router w/wireless. It's been stable for almost two years now. At first, I had unplugged it and let it sit a few minutes (a couple of times), but it behaved the same way. It was odd that I could not access it from any of the computers. All except the one with the issue, could ping it without a problem.
Anyway, it took two resets for it to come back. The first allowed the internal issue to go away, but the router would not pick up the DHCP WAN I.P. Second attempt fixed this as well. I was told after this, that the wifi was acting up as well. I upgraded the FW and told them to keep an eye on it. If this occurs again, I at least know to go pick up a new router first. The computer that was affected is the office managers and she was in the middle of payroll. The employee coup has been averted - for today... Dave |
I was going to guess some sort of MAC address caching issue, but since the holy hand grenade (reboot) seem to have fixed it.....

Reset, reset! Reboot did not work :D
