Selling Art
What would be the best way to sell the following:
TITLE: Hombre en Gris ARTIST: Rufino Tamayo WORK DATE: 1981 CATEGORY: Numbered Print MATERIALS: Mixograph SIZE: h: 32.2 x w: 41.2 in / h: 81.8 x w: 104.6 cm REGION: Mexican ![]() I have no idea about selling art and was wondering what is the best way to sell something like this. It's probably worth around 20k.

Depending on value. either E-bay or an auction.
If it is truly a 20K piece of work then auction is the only real means for you to get what it is worth. YOu have to pay them their vigourish..on this level I would say 5% is about what you could fight for and expect. They are going to make 15% on the buyer. You have to listen to them when they appraise it for and auction value. Bonhams on Sunset and Morans in Altadena are the 2 prime houses in LA...Morans is more CA art orientated. If the piece is worth in the 2K to 3K range or less e-bay is your best bet. One thing to consider when buying art, a Gallery charges retail, the real value is 1/2 of what a Gallery charges...so if ya paid 20K it really is only worth 10K and at auction you probably would get a bit less then that. One other alternative is to place it on consgnment with a Gallery, but I would want to see how long they have been around so that they just don't pack u one night and disappear with your piece of art. This is gona cost ya about 20% of sale price. Is you piece a PRINT or a LiTHOGRAPH?

To bad it's not an actual painting.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/30/arts/30arts-LATINAMERICA_BRF.html?_r=1 This site has a ton of mixographs for sale, asking price under $10k. Looks like if it's on handmade paper the prices go above $10k. http://www.artbrokerage.com/art/tamayo/

Lithography is a printing process.
Mixographs are prints made with a heavy etching technique. These links may be of interest to you: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Contemporary-Art-2803/tamayo-mixograph.htm http://www.artbrokerage.com/art/tamayo/

It's a mixograph #22 of 100 and the paper was hand made by the artist. Thx for all the input!
