Someday, air rifles will be as powerful as any rifle or handgun at a fraction of the operating cost. Right now they use compressed air or CO2 but I would venture a guess that reactive gas compression will soon make a scene and things will change forever ... until electro-mag makes the scene...

I live just out of town on 2ac. I can shoot almost any thing I want...but don't. I have shot 22 CB shorts and in most of my rifles it makes almost as much of a crack as a 22LR. I'd love to thin out the crow population and an air rifle can do it much more quietly I suspect.

I presently shoot the CB caps at target swingers backed by steel plate with ply wood in front of it to quiet the 'ding'. The CB's make no noise only in my Win. Low Wall target rifle.

Except for my college years, I have always lived somewhere that I can shoot anything from BB gun to 30-06 out my sliding glass door. That said, I still use my old Crossman 760 pump BB gun I got when I was probably 10 yrs old (30 yrs ago or so) for some delicate close up varmint situations. A head shot kill of a "cat sized" varmint at less than 10' is very do-able and a miss will not put a hole in you're deck/patio. Of course safety glasses must be donned as steel bb's bounce wildly off most materials.

Long barrels are the trick. My 22" Remington 581 is absolutely silent with CB longs, where my 18" 10-22 cracks pretty loudly (and won't cycle, either). Somewhere over 18" of barrel length, there is actually a vacuum forming behind the bullet, and only its momentum carries it down the rest of the barrel. No pressure behind the bullet, no noise.

How many acres? How many do you want? They have 40 acres. Some mornings you could get a pretty nice shot at a deer off of my in-law's deck. A reclining deck chair is much more comfortable than a tree stand.

It's actually a pretty lucrative business for many farmers. They rent out their land to "city folks" during hunting season.

Yup there are some guys around here that make more off of hunting leases than their wheat crops.
