That was my suspicion too. They just blew me off because it was at the height of the SoFLA building boom and people were renting construction equipment left & right.

The counter-loser said he called and left a message on my voicemail. My voicemail is 100% reliable and my phone indicates if I missed a call (plus, the only time I don't answer my phone live is if I'm in the shower). He either called the wrong # or didn't call at all.

I can't wait to drive by there again to see cobwebs on the equipment and the owner's Hummer up on blocks (e.g. - had to sell the chrome rimz in order to eat).

OK, thanks for the tip. I'll add one more sub-contractor to my payroll and spend a few days calling around sign companies to see who's not busy on the exact day/time I need them 1 month in advance. I also have them fax me a copy of their insurance docs listing me, the developer and the property owner as additional insureds. And, if they don't have $2mil liability, I'll ask them to bump-up their coverage, too.

porsche4life 08-22-2009 07:38 AM

Well thats asking alot as far as liability. I can tell you that most probably won't bump it up for one job.

The same EXACT thing happened to me two months ago.....I had to take my son's stuff from home to college so I planned the trip while one of my cars was in the body shop (i.e. free rental car). I called Enterprise and told the dork that I wanted to upgrade to a Suburban so when I arrived two weeks after I made my reservation, the guy had the nerve to recommend a freak’n Malibu. It was Sunday afternoon and I didn’t have time to work out a solution, so I ended up putting 2k miles on my F-250 which pissed beyond comprehension. When we returned from D.C., I called the regional manager to explain what had occurred and he offered three free days use of a Tahoe (which I used it during our family vacation in July).

Although Enterprise initially dinked up my trip (I'm still pissed at that F'ing dork), they did make it right after the fact.

Really? Ya think? $2mil is about standard. My umbrella is $7mil. That's what is required when working with bigger development companies 'round these here parts.

I'll keep a sign company in mind the next time I have a barn raising...

"Sorry, we never heard back from you, so we had to give your lift to someone else". said the dip-sheet behind the counter. "Never heard back from me...when?" I asked. "Oh, we called you a few days ago." Me: "Umm...no you didn't". Counter-boy just shrugs his shoulders and goes back to his paperwork.

Talk about pizzed. I went berserk. I thought the counter-loser was going to call the police. I was foaming at the mouth.

They called the owner (another big prick I'll never do business with again) and ended up giving me a bigger lift (which I had to pay the higher rate for).

F-er's. Never again. Now that construction has grinded to a halt, I hope they're twisting in the wind.

If it was THAT important, wouldn't the rental agreement be documented and signed, (fax or e-mailed) a deposit paid and a named rep of the rental company be in contact with you?

They only required my credit card # to hold. If you don't show up, your CC gets charged, right? Wouldn't that be enough encouragement to show up and claim your lift?

I showed up and...no lift.

They had a bigger fish on the line and let me go. That's all.

Hey Wilson,

Why so aggressive to porsche4life?

He was only offering a suggestion that he thought might help you out.

If it does not work then just say thanks but won't work in my situation.

Enterprise at the Birmingham Airport likes to rent dirty cars.... or so it would seem. We stopped using them because the cars were either dirty when we got there or they bumped us to something we didn't want to drive.... and, they're rude as stink.

Amen Brother. Made reservations by phone, flew to Shreveport, Penske picked me up at the airport, upgraded my truck for me for nothin', and it was ready to go when I got there, car trailer was even already hooked up. Just had to sign my name and go. Excellent service, worth every penny. I think it helps when you treat the person on the other end of the line with respect.

From the responses here, it would seem that Enterprise really varies according to location/region. I've had good luck w/ them in L.A. and Mpls., sometimes they don't have the vehicle I want when I call but they've never told me that they have something and lied.

It probably helps that I never call them way in advance, always on the day I want to rent. I'm pretty sure that advance reservations for a specific vehicle are worthless or at the least subject to availability. I've rented PU trucks from them and it was WAY cheaper than U-haul, which charges for mileage.

Shaun,

How'd you tie that bad boy down inside the truck?

mike55 08-22-2009 08:20 PM

Shaun, were those Katrina cars?

Jeremy, I nailed 2x8x8s to the floor fore and aft of the car and then screwed 2" eye-lags into them to which I strapped the car down. Worked perfectly. I just filled in the holes with epoxy.

Mike, these two cars sat out in a field in TX for about 20 years. Shreveport was the closest airport in northeastern TX. Wish I had been able to keep the 75 Carrera, it had faired pretty well. The S is a many-year restoration project, I'd be thrilled if it were done in 2013, but probably a year or two after is realistic.

strupgolf 08-23-2009 10:07 AM

No no, you have it all wrong. Enterprise says in their ad, "we'll pick you up", not that they will have a pick-up.
