Ideas on 'playhouse' for playroom in house?

With kiddo # 2 due very soon we have rearranged our home by converting the formal dining room into a playroom. In an effort to have something other than a brightly colored room with plastic bins stacked up everywhere I have decided to build a combination playhouse/storage 'building'.

Current concept is a pirates hideout (thought about the front or rear of a pirate ship but the curves are probably way beyond my carpentry skills) with a faux second story Disney style. Size will be roughly 4' x 3' at the base and i've figured the 1st story to be 6' in height with the 2nd story to be recessed somewhat and filling in the remaining 4' to the ceiling. I'm thinking of using wood shutters on the upstairs concealing shallow shelving that could store games and such.

The trick, as i see it, is to use closer to real construction methods and materials and not just paint up a plywood box. For this i would appreciate any input as to what, within reason, might be good to use. I'd like something you might actually see at the Pirates ride at Disney if possible.

Thoughts?

Completely different sort of playroom than I had in mind.

You beat me to it!

I was thinking something more in the lines of swings and whipcream
and satin sheets...

I think Hugh would be a big help here with the Disney concept!

That is neat...but i was hoping to be more authentic looking.

This isn't pirate themed but it's closer to what i'm trying to do (though i only want to do one 'building' roughly 4' wide and not an entire room...)

Room size, total, is something like 12x16 or so but i don't want this to overwhelm it or get too expensive. Initial plan is 3' deep and 4' wide give or take. ceilign height is 10'.

If i could find a REALLY awesome concept/materials i'd consider widening it to 10' or so but that isn't the current plan.

i'm trying to make functional storage with a fun twist.

I think the Pirate hideout is pretty cool!

Maybe also consider an Alien Spaceship! Make it any configuration you want and the control "consoles" can be flip-top toy storage.

you know i considered a space theme too but my little guy gets enough star wars between legos, wii and television so i thought i'd go a different route. neat idea on the storage consoles though!

talked with an architecht next door and it sounds like T-111 ripped along the 'slots' and lapped horizontally would make for a neat siding.

I did a sailing ship themed outdoor bar for someone about 10 yrs ago, That was alot of fun to design and build. It was basically the back deck of a sailing/pirate ship as the bar with a mast center piece up behind the bar, with rigging on it and a crows nest up top. I gotta see if i can dig up pics of that.
