Always Ferrari on Speed

After the buildup on the F1 broadcasts this weekend, I was really looking forward to seeing this, but I was totally underwhelmed. The way the guys on Speed talked, it was an "Unprecedented look" at the Ferrari F1 factory.
Something was lost in production.
Matchett shows us more abut the workings of F1 in his Racing Per Matchett series. (For instance, todays' installment - the Team Red Bull Design studio, where 175  employees design the F1 stuff.)

I would love to visit Maranello someday, but it is not Hallowed Ground to me. It is a place where nice cars are built. Same goes for Stuttgart, for that matter.

So typical of car shows these days. They play to the lowest denominator (the producer :D).

Maybe they'll make a 2 hour special out of it.

Sometimes I wonder if Machette really writes his books. His technical peices seem to be more about him being amazed that we're getting to see it and not about the actual technical aspect.

They spent 10 minutes on a letter that Mr. Ferrari signed witha violet pen. GMAFB!

I was really disappointed. I thought they might focus more on the technology of designing, building and managing an F1 car and team. Focused too much on the legend of Ferrari and not the the tech .

Just like the "RPM" segments that Matchet hosts: Totally underwhelmed...

herr_oberst 08-24-2009 07:40 AM

I like the RPM segments - at least you see something new, like clutch packs, header building, that kind of thing. Always Ferrari showed nothing new at all. "Ooh here we are in the F1 Build Bay" BFD. I wanted to see the transmission shop and the model studio. The test benches. NOT Enzo's violet ink.

Cool look at the buildings. That was about it IMHO. Disappointed.

I've got to wonder if Ferrari overpromised and underdelivered, leaving the producer to piece together some kind of show from very little usable footage...

URY914 08-24-2009 08:46 AM

They guys over at FerrariChat all loved it. ...............of course.

Doubt it. If that is the case thought, then Matchett oversold it. The intro said something like "From a cold but sunny Maranello...", so it must been filmed early in the season. Saying this would be a great show about Ferrari F1 would be an overstatement IMO.

One last thing, it might have been a good show about Ferrari, but a lousy show on Ferrari's F1 effort.

For 10 Euros you can see more in the museum than they showed in the whole program. Totally disapointed.

FastCarFan 08-24-2009 09:35 AM

Wow. Sorry to hear the show isn't all that good. I heard about it, taped it & was planning to watch it this evening. I will still watch it...but with much lower expectations.

I've noticed lots of great 'geek' shows are getting dumbed down. We went from Victory by Design where we get a soulful close up of fantastic cars to 'Twist the Throttle' which is essentially a great big commercial loaded with enough vague hyperbole to satiate Obamas campaign manager.
