Need going away gift idea for buddy headed to Afghanistan

He is headed there as a quasi-State Dept independent contract adviser to Afghan police forces (sounds like Blackwater to me). His second 18 month contract. Any suggestions? Weapons and ammo are provided by his employer.

A nice multi tool? Something he would carry and use. I feel naked without my Leatherman.

Blue swim goggles... Dunno why, but it seems to be the thing there. At least my buddy has a pic with a pair on.

Tactical flashlights are always good, as are decent folder knives.

A friend of mine is heading back over towards the end of the year. There is a possibility that some of our crew could be asked to do a short visit (me included). Not so sure about that...

how about a tough digital camera - this one is pretty cool

The camera that redefines tough. The Stylus 1030 SW is one tough camera. The Shockproof, Waterproof, Freezeproof and Dustproof design gives active people the confidence to take this camera anywhere and shoot in nearly any condition. Plus, the wide-angle lens lets users capture more of what they see. Great for divers, surfers, rafters, skiers and anyone with an active lifestyle.

Books on tape, sunglasses, cheap digital camera for him to send you pictures with, handy bag/backpack to carry stuff while on mission, books, magazine subscriptions

While he is there, frequent letters, cards, and small packages of cookies.

speaking from experience.....

Magazine subscriptions? When I was in that area getting something from home that had absolutely nothing about the middle east was really appreciated. Send it to his APO mailbox and brighten his day.

chinese superstition. dont give a friend a blade without him handing you a buck, or a few cents. he needs to technically "buy" the gift from you, so he doenst attract...how do i say this? the caped dude with the scithe thing...

If he's taking it with him, it needs to be compact, easily transportable, and useful. When my nephew joined the Army I bought him a watch that has special features for map reading and navigation. He said it was helpful during navigation training in basic.

That is the most important thing you can do...and I speak from experience as well. Staying in touch with those deployed means everything.

Get him a Pak-Light. Really cool little LED flashlight that's the size of your fingertip. It plugs onto the end of a 9-volt battery.
