when did the sunday comics...get boring?

all the good funnies are gone...

you guys still reading them?

Hebrewhomeboy 08-24-2009 07:02 PM

Garfield hasn't been funny for many years. Gary Larson retired a while ago, so no more Far Side. I agree, comics suck nowadays.

javadog 08-24-2009 07:02 PM

No longer read newspapers...

Theres also no good cartoons on t.v anymore. my favorite was teenage mutant ninja turtles or the real ghost busters.

"The Far Side" ceased publication 1/1/95...

"politically correct" removed a lot of fun in life...

I kinda like this one...

Unfortunately, our Sunday paper doesn't carry "Rehabilitating Mr. Wiggles"...

Last day for Calvin and Hobbes.

Bad day...

dd74 08-24-2009 11:34 PM

The LA Times had great Sunday comics. Calvin and Hobbes, the Far Side, BC and Crock, Andy Capp. Doonesbury is still around, and people still whore out Peanuts even though Schultz has been dead a while (he died New Years Eve -- the last day the final Peanuts was to run, IIRC).

I think the problem is fewer news companies syndicate that much anymore, which is how these artist-writers make their bread and butter.

And the PC crap that today's media outlets let seep into their craft doesn't help either.

Doonesbury has been pulled several times for its socio-political insensitivities, and Andy Capp was stopped entirely because the main character (Andy) was a boozing, womanizing, snooker-playing, chain smoking oaf on the British Dole -- a perfect character for today, IMO. Problem is that's another comic where the artist died right alongside the strip.

VINMAN 08-25-2009 03:52 AM

Mother Goose is still pretty good.

cmccuist 08-25-2009 04:05 AM

I defy anyone to find one single Peanuts cartoon that is funny. Most overrated strip in history. Charles Schulz was an a-hole. 50 years he made Charlie Brown a loser at EVERYTHING because he thought that was funnier than having him win at something.

I still like Dilbert (except Wally).

That's not an actual "Calvin and Hobbes" strip, of course.

"Dilbert" and "Pearls Before Swine" are okay.

legion 08-25-2009 04:57 AM

I stopped reading years ago. Far Side was outstanding. Dilbert had a good run but has been in decline for years. I can't tell you the names of any other comics currently running. I read xkcd online. I used to read PVP too, but I got frustrated after too many convoluted stories that ended up going nowhere.

As for cartoons, watch "Adult Swim" on cartoon network. These are cartoons geared towards adults. Some suck, like Squidbillies, Drinky Crow, and Family Guy, but there are some real gems, like Robot Chicken, Venture Brothers, and Harvey Birdman.

jyl 08-25-2009 05:08 AM

Cartoons - the kids and I like "Spongebob", find it hilariously stupid, like "Ren and Stimpy". "Avatar" was really good, still being re-run.

Porsche virgin 08-25-2009 05:38 AM

I read old Calvin and Hobbes and Bloom County strips on the Web, and I still read Dilbert, Pearls Before Swine, and Monty. It is rare that I actually laugh, but every once in a while, there is a good one.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1251207131.gif

Honestly, I find more humor from random stuff on the 'net than comics.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1251207385.jpg

Dave and Buster's restaurant chain advertises that "Everyone has a Fun." A "Fun" being something like an inner self that doesn't take life so serious.

I don't get to go to Dave and Buster's.

My Fun was tied up, shot twice in the back of the head, and dumped in a swamp somewhere in New Jersey around 9 years ago.

In case you don't have a D&B in your area, this is what I am referring to:

GH85Carrera 08-25-2009 09:30 AM

Beetle Bailey has been about af un-funny as Peanuts. Both are total waste of space. Dilbert is the only one that ever has anything funny anymore.

onewhippedpuppy 08-25-2009 11:47 AM

Far Side and Calvin & Hobbs, pretty much the pinnacle of comics. Except for Dilbert, the rest are total crap.

vash 08-25-2009 12:54 PM

i like the shark one...sherman's lagoon. good stuff.

someone needs to step it up.

When were Sunday comics not boring?

WolfeMacleod 08-25-2009 06:29 PM

Died with C&H and the Far Side.

On the last day of Calvin and Hobbes, I was driving Seattle to southern Oregon and dictated a poem into a tape recorder I had to carry everywhere..
I don't remember most of it, but here's how it started.

Today we lose a boy and beast
Who, upon our laughter, did feast
More important than Emperor Nero,
No ordinary newspaper Comic Strip hero...

I don't remember the rest of it though. Sure wish I could. :(
