I caught the interview on the radio earlier today with Ally Jacobs and Lisa Campbell (the UCPD officers who "smelled a rat" so to speak when Garridos met with them to discuss having a religious event on the Berkley campus). Worth a listen. They're pretty down-to-earth - obviously not the most polished or skilled interviewees, but it's still interesting. Mostly it came down to hunches and good gut instinct, which a lot of police work does (ask a cop sometime).

I agree there's something to be said about rewriting the laws to be much harsher with respect to sexual offenders. IMHO rape should be a capital crime. The victims will require many years of therapy and even then, may never be truly "normal".

I agree with all comments made here....but what I do not understand is why the mother (now 29) and her kids did not try to escape (maybe they did and we do not know the details yet?) Surely they could have snuck over that wooden fence in the night or tried "something" to run...or reach out to a neighbor...look at how close the neighbors houses are.

I fear that her life and her children will be tragically ruined. They will need alot of support to integrate back into society.

Sadly there are more young children that are abducted much like this every single day and we never know what happens to them. I cringe every time I am in Walmart and they have the pictures of "Have You Seen XXX....Age 8.... Missing since 19XX"..

The initial report I've heard is that Jaycee Dugard is afflicted with Stockholm Syndrome. Keep in mind she's had contact with pretty much ONLY this guy for 18 years.

This is going to take a long time to "set right" and may not even ever happen.

Unless he's kept in solitary confinement, this guy won't live long in prison.

I find this VERY hard to believe. 800K kids a year? This must include run-a-ways and kids lost in a store yet get found in the toy dept.

That's an accurate number.

The breakdown is listed on the DOJ website, but you have to dig. I think "abducted by strangers" is something around 60k/yr.

Sick situation. Definitely Stockholm Syndrome as any kid over 5 or so could eventually escape just about any douchebag captor given a strong enough desire to do so, IMHO.

I feel really bad for the step father. Sure, the kid & her daughters are messed up, but this guy has (apparently) been presumed guilty by many since her disappearance. Yet he clearly didn't do it.
