I've got AWD - but only to "haul" myself to the office through SoCal traffic.

Had an 04 Sti. Loved every minute of it. Sold it back in 05 when I bought a 94 3.6 Turbo(loved that car as well)

Nope, no Subi's here.

My "offroad" capable vehicles:

My other street vehicle down at my house in FL is a 93 Toyota MR2 Turbo

And we now interrupt the "off road capable" commercial with a little bit of "on road" humility. On our third Legacy/Outback as well as having two AWD Audis. Fantastic on ski trips and up hills while everyone else is parked in the snow. We now return you to the testosterone filled holier than tho "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand" PSA already in progress.

Ha! Funny thread. Yeah, I've got a subie as well. I've owned three.

Yes. 2012 Outback 3.6R Limited. At least it's a flat-6 too!

We call it the "Japanese Audi"

No Screwbaroos here, My 4x4's now are an '05 YukonXL for hauling and an '04 Escape for the better half. Prior to these ones were an '00 Sierra and a '95 Passport.

I have a 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback as my DD.

simonr 09-06-2012 10:31 AM

Subaru

I own two subarus 2003 outback and 2011 outback . Great vehicles. The 2003 is the better of the two IMHO

Ryan H 09-06-2012 11:10 AM

2006 4runner and 2001 Integra Type R. Not really a Subi guy. I'd probably throw too much money at it...

:D

Be careful out there, VERY carefull....

Many Subbies, current WRX included, only have "pretend" F/awd, marketing purposes ONLY. Only form of "awd" is via last resort TC braking.

Where exactly did you come up with this information?

dfhtrhjn 09-06-2012 11:57 AM

I've got 911 rs for street and a Land Rover discovery for dirty work.

Yes, North/South engine mounting allows/requires equal length front halfshafts, thus "symmetrical" "AWD". Given all the versions of "awd" capability that Subbie uses, has used, over the years at first I didn't understand the "symmetrical" bit.

Then I ran across some Subbie literature that explained their (uniquely misleading) use of the term.

The only full time "symmetrical" AWD one might have equates ONLY to three full open diff'ls, front/center, rear. Fully "symmetrical" , 25/25/25/25, right up to the point wherein you find yourself, unless TC is "on", with a "ONE-WHEEL" drive system.

*bzzzt* false.

Subaru does indeed use many AWD systems but all of them have some sort of active center differential. The one in my 2005 Legacy GT is a viscous and the rear diff is viscous also. The STI has a center diff that lets the driver dial in the torque split. Further, Subaru has used Torsens in the rear of a number of models. My Subaru doesn't even have electronic traction control of any form

By contrast, the '98 Audi A4 I owned used EDL (electronic differential lock) for transferring torque side to side. It grabbed the brake on the wheel that was spinning. This couldn't be shut off by the driver. Torque split front to back was by means of a center Torsen.

The system you described is what Mercedes uses. All three diffs are open and torque is directed away from the spinning wheel(s) by applying the brake.

Surprised to find I have not replied to this thread! On my fourth Subaru wagon as daily driver: wouldn't be without one now. Got a few other cars, but the Sube is great to run.

This is an '02 Outback 2.5 with manual trans, runs on propane gas. Tank is in the wheel well in the trunk. Still has the main petrol tank underneath and you do use a little for starting etc. And for touring in countries where they don't sell propane gas for fuel (Ireland).

Economy is the same as gasoline but, here in the tax-mad UK, propane gas is less than half the price.

I take this everywhere. Back at home in Ireland for a wedding:

Maybe this is because you can't haul a$$ over gravel, snow and dirt without tearing up your nice 911 and you get a sub-con-science* need to have a vehicle for these things. Let's see your Porsche and your Subaru [or etc.]. Doesn't have to be in the same photo, but let's see if my theory rings true.

* sub-con-science means that you have scientifically analyzed your vehicular needs (well, ok, "desires") and realized deep in the depths of your hidden Freudian Jungophilic limbic system that the best way to rid yourself of absolute LUST for ripping over broken ground (without skis) is in an old $wd or AWD beater. Something you can tear apart because it is cheap and sub-con. Now, that's science.

yes, i also own a subaru wrx bought in '04 and modified with all the "good stuff'....never let me down and it is certainly quick.every 3 years i think i should sell it and buy something else but, uptill now, i always changed my mind and kept it.
last time this happened, i decided to purchase another '73 911.
so now i have two '73 911's and still have the '04wrx.:)

'73 911E Targa rebuilt as 2.7 mfi
'73 911t coupe rebuilt as 2.7 webers
