Amen to that. Especially the freaking swine flu. You know the one that's killed something like 1,500 people WORLDWIDE. Compared to the regular flu that kills 40,000+ in AMERICA EVERY YEAR. The fear related to this virus is proof that the average American is nothing but a foolish sheep. Hell, I HOPE I get the swine flu. It sounds far more pleasant than the regular flu.

I don't care about...

How they do things in Europe. Or Canada. Or some random third world hell-hole.

How you did it wherever it was you used to live before you came here. If it was that great, why did you leave?

Your or (anyone's) favorite sports team. If you talk about them as if you are somehow involved "We did good yesterday" "We need a better Quarterback" there is a good chance I will openly mock you.

In fact I really don't care much about any stick and ball sports, primarily because of the people who play them.

Any "reality" TV. The only exceptions to this is if there are green and checkered flags involved, 5 minute rounds where blood may flow, or where the athletes only need to perform for 8 seconds. And maybe that Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader thing. That one is kind of riveting, assuming you use the "mute" button.

I am not afraid of...

Swine flu, Avian flu, West Nile Virus, SARS, and for that matter HIV.
Firearms.
Global warming
Vaccinations for my kid (Jenny McCarthy is a farking nitwit)
Having my dog neutered somehow making me less of a man.
What people I do not know or care about think of me.

"The fear related to this virus is proof that" the news media have caught up to the scientists.

You apparently do not realize that this flu strain has enormous potential -- it could easily kill millions in the US alone. Worldwide it could kill many many more, certainly in the hundreds of millions.

If there is enough caution (limiting contagion, so that isolates die out) then it may be nothing more than a "normal" flu in terms of its impact.

I am not afraid of the swine flu. Just like the CDC lied about heterosexual AIDS and overreacted to SARS, how do we trust them now?

Z-man 09-03-2009 09:33 AM

To clarify - while I am not afraid of swine flu, I do recognize that it is indeed a dangerous virus which has reached near epidemic proportions.

Therefore, I am careful - I wash my hands and use hand sanitizer - but I am not paranoid - I won't be wearing a mask and remove myself from society in hopes of avoiding a plague...

I'd like to remove myself from society in hopes of avoiding humans.

So Paris Hilton's "accidental" nip slip is much more important. OMG Britney was seen with Kevin last night, jez where's my handbag.

Yep, swine flu wasn't that big of a deal for me. Got it 3 weeks ago. Had a 102^F fever for 3 days followed by 2 days of 99.5^F No respiratory or sinus problems. Minor joint pain. Nothing that 2 extra stregth Tylenol every 6 hours couldn't keep under control. Not pleasant, but certainly not the worst flu I ever had.

I don't care about:

the things that other people are afraid of

I'm not afraid of:

the things other people say will happen

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't there numerous viruses that could kill millions if they were to mutate? That's like saying that LA real estate would be cheap tomorrow if the big one hit. H1N1 in it's current form is not a scary thing, and there's no real informed reason to believe that it will mutate and kill millions.

RWebb 09-03-2009 09:50 PM

mutability varies among viruses

Z-man 09-04-2009 06:19 AM

From what I've read, they've seen little or no mutations of the H1N1 virus, which is a bit surprising given how widespread the virus is.
