I think the tides have turned for Hyundai and Kia. You'll find resale values increase (a 'trailing' indicator). They are truly equal to American and Japanese products now. Go drive one. The newest generations are genuinely good cars for the money.
I seriously disagree. I don't see the values increasing at the dealers auctions i attend, and i really don't see any huge improvement in quality either.

They're better than the early cars, yes, but the early cars were SO BAD, that's not really saying much.

Anyone seen the Top Gear where they test the Korean cars? Probably one of the funniest episodes they've made.

The line at the end of Pineapple Express is classic: "You just got killed by a Daewoo Lanos, mother****er!"

There are a ton of GMs that have an extremely high resale value, and will last for decades. Do i really need to post some examples?
My father is on his second Sonata. Both have been as reliable as a Toyota. His current nearly new one features better build quality than any new GM vehicle short of a Cadillac, and is decent to drive for an appliance.

Snipe, have you seen what a used Cobalt or G6 sells for? It really can't get much worse.

Short sighted.

That was exactly the attitude of the British motorcycle industry when the Japanese first started producing and importing their motorcycles.

Look where that got them.

My "shortsighted" view is based on 23 years of Hyundai sales in the US. They are what they are.

A cavalier or grand am or G6 or cobalt of any year will pretty handily outvalue a comparable Hyundai, and will generate far more interest on a used car lot.

South Korea is a very bad place to make cars hey...!!! probably that's why GM crap company put their name on a car made there...! Put this in perspective...I will buy a made in South Korea car hundred times over a GM crap one. And please remove this word (Cavalier) from your vocabulary...

My wife is a past owner of both a Grand Am AND a Cavalier. They both were sheer garbage. She now owns a Toyota, which has been the best car she's ever owned. I'm sure if and when it dies she'll get another.

I wouldn't consider even looking at another Detroit-produced "economy" car. Not a chance. I know the build quality and everything is better today, but I find their past and present sins and stupidity to be unforgivable. Besides, why would I voluntarily hand money to the UAW?

Normally I'm a big advocate of "buy domestic", but not when it comes to situations (like cars) where foreign competition has us COMPLETELY outclassed - and in areas other than just price.

I would possibly consider a Ford (they're not quite as guilty of the same stupidity sins as GM) but would be unlikely to actually buy one simply because I don't want a dime of my money going to the UAW.

My old man sells probably 50 grand am/cav's a year, he doesn't even let me buy hyundais for his dealership at the auctions anymore. Zero interest. They generate no leg traffic at all- whereas Grand Am's and cav's fly (or i should say "flew" before the economy crashed) off the lot.

PS: I think all the cars we've discussed here are pretty much crap. LOL.

Perhaps things are different in your part of the world. When I was helping my sister in law find a car for under $10k, the new body style Sonata was on her list. We couldn't find one in her price range, but could find plenty of comparable Cobalts (similar price/mileage). Those "crap" Hyundais are far superior to any comparably priced domestic, and typically for less money.
