Trust me, this is not the case. I might have no sense... :D

May be, but if I was not insane I will never be in this forum ;) Many people questioned my sense for spending (investing in my view) money on moding a '76 911 instead of buying almost a new one for the same $$$....but what do I know!!!..on top of that i don't know if you have ever been in Rye Train station, but the first day I arrived there I though that there was a promotion of Porsche and they were giving them away!!!!

don't get stuck on the train station thing. That's just the boring part, I want something fun to drive on the weekends, when I turn my 911 into a pure track car. The train station is some to consider only because I need a car that can also go out every day.

S4 sounds good.

From personal experience in the NE, I have found that the best combo ever is sports car/Jeep Cherokee (the old boxy ones). The Jeep is super-cheap and gets decent fuel mileage, is bullet-proof (mine has over 200k of hard miles), and great in the snow and very useful as a multi-purpose vehicle.

Considering your budget, I would say that you have enough to A.) buy a Cherokee for ~$2.5K and B.) buy a nice Boxster/Cayman/Vette/930 for use as a sports car

Only other factor is how much room do you have to park everything? If it absolutely has to be one car, unless you can get dropped off on snowy days I surely wouldn't get the Vette and the others are questionable. In this case, I would consider the closest thing to a 996 C4S you can get for the money.

I know this is a Porsche forum, but I have owned Vettes as well, and I love them. As soon as I get the extra garage space/get the money saved up I am going to get a C6 to compliment my 930. A friend has a C6 Z06 I have driven, and it is an incredible car. Despite being an absolute beast, it is still more civil and docile than my 930 when put-putted around town, doesn't overheat, etc.

Long story short, if you can find a way to get a nice C6 Z51 + 98-01 Cherokee XJ 4x4, I think you would have a very ideal set up that, along with a track-focused 911, will enable you to do enjoy many aspects of motoring:

the precision handling and finesse of a Porsche, the raw power and visceral thrills (and accompanying giggle fits) of a late-model vette, and the reliability, practicality, off-road capability (not to mention freedom that is associated with driving a vehicle you won't mind if someone bangs up) of a Cherokee.

It soulds like you really want the Vette, so get it and a cheap used 325XI for the winter months.

and your welcome for the wonderful post.. enjoy your ford...

nineball 09-04-2009 05:39 AM

calling it a ford is like calling a lexus a toyota - just because there is a parent company does not mean they are the same thing. since you don't have anything worthwhile to contribute to this thread feel free to continue to prove your ignorance via a pm to me.

masraum 09-04-2009 05:43 AM

You know, I hear that Mustangs, Camaros, Corvettes and Vipers are GREAT to drive in snow

If you want fun and snow worthy, get something cheaper than $35k and possibly AWD, like an Evo, WRX, or Carrera 4.

Porsche-O-Phile 09-04-2009 06:02 AM

My god the 951 I could built with $35k...

It'd scare you.

Mario:

It's been said before, but I'll say it again.

993 Carrera 4.

You'll love it!

Cheers,

Paul.

If it were me I would get a Subaru...

Although the Cherokee + Vette idea is intriguing... Cherokee is a good DD, beater, snow car, hauler, camper and the Vette is the American muscle car you are looking for.

pwd72s 09-05-2009 02:06 PM

Don't buy a Mustang...not enough status.

aigel 09-05-2009 02:27 PM

Here is why I would not buy an X-type:

X-type Jaguars are based on the CDW27 Ford platform. Shared with the FWD Mondeo. The reason the Jag has AWD is because they had to distinguish it from the Ford Mondeo. This means the car has the engine sit in a FWD configuration ...

http://www.automotivetraveler.com/im...ompartment.jpg

That right there, is why I wouldn't touch the car with a 10 foot pole. A V6 in there sideways - have fun working on the back 3 cylinders. ;)

It being a ford platform car is actually a plus, IMHO. Look at the pre-Ford years: Scary!

Cheers,

George

Please don't listen to those who say that the Corvette cannot be driven in snow. It is a front-mid engine / rear transaxle car so the weight is near 50/50, unlike a Camaro, Mustang, or BMW 3 series. Just swap out the performance tires for snow tires and you'll be good for all but the deepest snow days. Traction control, stability control, great ABS, and a real heater.

I'm NOT saying the Corvette is what you should buy, there are lots of great cars, BUT....

You owe it to yourself to have the American experience of a musclecar that, while common here, isn't readily accessible in Europe. Could you afford to drive a 6.0L V8 in Spain? Aren't taxes and gas prices prohibitive to a Vette as a daily driver? Just think of the tales you'll tell when you move back!

The 'modern' Corvettes (C5/C6) are amazing cars. Different than a Porsche, different than a BMW, but that's kinda the point.... isn't it?

tc-sacto 09-05-2009 02:54 PM

Since you've already got the toy and Suv. How about a nice performance sedan. Can fit kids when Suv not needed. Great for date night if the wife doesn't like the roughnes of an early 911. Still sporty and easy to drive in traffic...plus dead reliable.

Lexus IS 350....2006 or 2007 models go for about $25 -27K. Put the extra money in go fast parts for the 911. or take a nice vacation.

Boy..., maybe a 4 year old Aston Martin V8 Vantage? Just dreaming b/c I don't think they depreciate that fast but one can hope. Blk w/ champaign interior. A perfect specimen would be a wealthy middle aged house frau's daily driver. I just love the design.

996 c4s

Mrmerlin 09-06-2009 04:26 AM

since now body mentioned it I will be the first
Take 5 K and go buy a 85/86 928 keep the manhole wheels fitted with some Blizzaks and drive the wee out of it.
It will run great and it handles snow ok if you dont put on too wide of a snow tire but they have to be on all 4 wheels
With the extra 30K go find a nice diamond for your wife and then go buy a nice motorcycle for you, your choice on the diamond/bike

austin552 09-06-2009 05:01 AM

How about a truck and tow your 911 race car.

stomachmonkey 09-06-2009 06:51 AM

First off understand the culture of the NE train commuter car.

You buy what is called a "Station Car". It's a piece of crap that you pay no more than $1,000-$1,500 for. Less is better.

It only needs to pass annual inspection. Whether or not it has working heat and A/C is really dependent on how far your drive to the train station is. Under 5 miles and it's not really needed.

You don't do any maintenance other than the minimum oil/fluid changes. If it dies pull the plates off and leave it. Find a new one on the way home.

Put the minimum insurance on that you can get.

Being a slave to the train schedule means station commuter cars get a LOT of abuse.

People generally jump in them, don't let them warm up properly and drive them hard for two miles then they sit all day. They get dinged, scratched, broken into, bake in the sun etc....

If you live within 5 miles of the train spending $35k on a commuter car is a waste of money.
