VW scraps Panamera and Cayenne - Now Way
 

I didn't see this posted but I wanted the collective "unreal"; can this be true...

The power struggle between VW and Porsche has come to an end, and with it will come the end of Wendelin Wiedeking's reign as the director of Porsche. Wiedeking was responsible for shifting production at Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory, which formerly manufactured 2-door sports cars, to building SUVs and sedans.

Meanwhile VW chairman Ferdinand Piëch wants to get Porsche back to its basics. As a result, two Porsche products, the Panamera sedan and the Cayenne SUV, will be scrapped and will disappear at the end of their production cycles in 2016.

In the meantime, we may see an entry-level model, based on a VW platform, that will take after the Porsche 356, along with a sports car to be part of the Carrera GT line.

They should bring back a modern variant of the 914 - a 2-door, mid engine with superb handling priced around $30k-$35k. That would do well.

Oh wait, Lotus already does that. My bad.

So all the grey hairs waiting for the delivery of their new Panamera won't fall over dead of a heart attack :D

I thought the lotus was double that price at $60k?

And, isn't that sort of what was described above by "that will take after the 356"? If you've got 2 lightweight, back to basics sports cars in your history to choose from being the 356 and 914, which would you use for marketing, the sexy car that started it all or the ugly duckling VW/Porsche?

I suspect they have to make some of their development money back before they kill them off.

The only way VW is cutting the Cayenne would be to eliminate the competition to the heavy, spot-welded, VW Touareg. As for the Panamera, I would expect we'll have to wait and see what sales are doing. I could see some rebadging happening.


btw, is it official now, that VW owns Porsche?

One thing about Piech, (albeit he is an overbearing sort)--he has his roots in Porsche racing --maybe we will see some return to what made the marque.

I disagree.
One thing I like about Porsches is that you don't see them on every corner (at least not over here)
Porsche should make high end cars, not Wallmart racers.
Just my two cents, but maybe I'm selfish like that, I believe not everybody should be driving Porsche.

If VW owns Porsche, scrapping anything in the Porsche lineup that isn't high-performance oriented makes perfect sense.

Let VW produce the SUVs and four doors. Porsche will be the go-to brand in the VW house for fast wheels.

So.. we' ll see the R8 become a P-car, and the Veyron....and the RS4 and RS6....Bentley Continental and Flying Spur...;)

The evolution of Porsche from a small niche car to a 'performance brand' means that the Cayenne and Panamera have been developed...high performance cars, arguably the best in their sector, as extensions of the smaller cars' range.

The 356 was never a 'cheap' car...

Regardless it will be an interesting time.

The RS4 is an Audi, correct? An Audi isn't a Porsche, just as a GTi isn't a Porsche. I don't think either car hurts Porsche sales.

Bentley and Veyron - boutique stuff like Maybach. I don't see either factoring in too highly in VW vs. Porsche.

Not necessarily. Porsche was fine w/o an SUV and a four-door. Market share dictated that decision. Extending the performance range to the SUV and four-door was a given as they were to wear the Porsche badge.

Yeah, and to see a modern-day type 356 for $35K is a pipe dream. Try $70K, and one might be in the ballpark.

!!!! viewed from over here you are joking...The number of people who buy an RS to accommodate a growing family who cannot fit in a P car is the serious factor in the success of the RS group of cars...But I guess that in the US there is a different deomgraphic that does not fit this as well..

The Bugatti factor would kill any future high end P-car (Carrera GT etc)...at least whilst Peich is alive...

The alternative perspective is that Prosche required range expansion to survive as sales of the 911 inadequate to survive... hence the Boxster and Cayenne...allowing people to own two P cars instead of one...and now three with the Panamera

Overall I think that this limits Porsche to producing a sports copue...a 911 if you will for ever...which is a good or bad thing depending on your perspective..
