If you use them properly, they can be effective tools for work. I joined Facebook simply to get reacquainted with my college friends, who are scattered around the planet. That worked fine, found them all over a few weeks, now we chat a bit and that's it.

Create a Facebook page for your business, and you suddenly get a HUGE amount of free advertising. Fans (happy customers) support you, pass your site around to other people, your company name gets out REALLY fast. It's a lot easier to send the Facebook link of a business that made you happy to all of your Facebook friends than it is to actually sit down with them, and say "hey, so and so company made me happy, write down their phone number". Same with Twitter, use if for the Forces of Good, and it's effective.

I still avoid those sites though. I have no interest in being anything other than "anonymous" to the world-at-large. More often than not, "off the radar as much as possible" is a good place to be...

I'd wonder about some of the girls on those sites though. I mean, if they're seriously going to meet up and shag some guy off the Internet, how much other action have they seen? For cheap flings, sure - probably great. Like bars. For anything substantial, nah. I can't see it really working. I'm sure there are some exceptions, but I'm sure that's true of sleazy bars too.

What's a Twitter?

Probably something you don't want to know about ;)

Imagine texting thousands of people at once.
Then imagine that they can take your text, and send it on to thousands more.

Now do it 20 or 30 times a day, about the most boring parts of your life. That's Twitter :D

But, as I said, if you're a business, you can announce special sales/events for your Twitter fans "Hey, for the next hour, the lattes are a $1 off if you bring up this Tweet!" kinda stuff.

My wife has a FB account. She keep up with a few friend from her home town. But 75% of people that ask to be her friend she denies. She didn't know them then and has no reason to get to know them now.

I don't have one. I spend enough time on this stupid wired box w/o joining another site.

Not bragging here... But I had a stalker once.

She sounded really nice. She used to phone me up at 3:00am which was a bit of a PITA but better than having no one phone me I guess. I suspect she worked as a nurse or shiftworker at the hosital two streets over as she always called in the middle of the night. Strange thing is she didn't say much. Sometimes she's say "How are you Dickhead?", and I'd fairly much just say "Fine thanks, and how are you", shed say "OK, and what have you been doing" So it wasn't actually that exciting and when I sked her to phone during the day instead of the middle of the night she wouldn't call me for the next two weeks. But she knew all about me and I didn't reconise her (very nice) voice.

The thing about facebook, and moreso even with Twitter, is that it makes people feel more like celebrities. They broadcast all factions of their lives- whether it be party pictures or little status updates about where they are going.

Everyone wants to be Angelina Jolie. People love the fact that other people watch what they do like they are on Inside Edition. Because it creates the illusion of popularity.

-GM's On-Star GPS following your every daily ocation/listening to your conversations/unlocking your doors/disabling your vehicle, or

-Private information brokers(supported by banks and major retailers) selling credit-card and other personal data to anyone.
