My wife will occasionally act/react in a manner that I disagree with. But I back her up in front of the kids and then I discuss it with the wife later when the kids are in bed. |

A house divided eventually starts a thread on Pelican:cool: During the school year there is no TV or XBox during the week before HW is done or after 9 o'clock. There are always exceptions, but they can pretty much go to bed anytime after the TV and XBox are off. XBox in a kids bedroom? Not going to happen. |
The Xbox comes with parental controls built in. Use them...
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/familysettings/console/xbox360/consolefamilysettings.htm -My 9&11 are in bed by 830, lights out, they could stay awake if they like but lights are out. -No Xbox on weekdays, only weekends for hrs a day if they behaved during the weekdays. Teenagers need lots of sleep, if they are not getting it at home they are getting it in school. |
I've got a solution to your problem.....it is something I'm very stern about....
No tv in the bedroom......period. My wife asked me a few times and I put my foot down. Period. Why? Bedrooms are a place to "unplug" and relax, sleep, or whatever.....you get my point.....a tv is a distraction, be it hooked up to cable or video games. I grew up in a house with a tv in every room, what I saw was parents who ignored each other and watched tv, a brother who did god knows what locked in the room, etc etc..... Put the tv/video games in a separate room. A stereo is fine, music is a window to the soul.....but tv will rot the brain..... We have 2 tv's in our house, living room, and the computer room....we have no kids, when we do they will not have a tv in there room....... |
My parents used to say "If you're not in bed by 11pm... come straight home!" ;)
Seriously though... are you having difficulty getting them up and ready in the mornings? Stupid question. Let me rephrase... are you having more difficulty than usual getting them ready in the mornings? As someone mentioned, kids need their sleep to be functional the next day. Staying up to midnight regularly on school nights will lead to learning and behaviour problems. I think you do have to talk to your wife and see why she doesn't share your concerns about this. Quote:

If they are playing xbox live, deny access privileges after a defined time via your router.

I remember way back then I used to stay up pretty darn late many nights...typically reading sci-fi books, as this was the pre-video game pre-5 TV's per household era. I did have a stereo rig in my room and some headphones. Listened to some pretty eclectic stuff including the early KROQ (Pasadena, CA).
If I had a PC and/or game console and/or TV in my room back then, it would've been trouble for sure! Our son (8) is not allowed to have such gadgets in his bedroom. He pretty much has the run of the house outside of there and that's how it should be IMO. |

I can build an engine, a house, cook a meal fit for a Thanksgiving Diner. I don't understand my computer...can you give me an idea on the time limit screw in the router? |
I got my 944 before I got hooked on video games. I am in college and I really don't play that much. I mean I will when my room mate is or something but if I have hours I say eff it and go play in the real world.

Our 15yo has a WoW addiction that we don't control very well. His access to the game is directly related to grades. Unfortunately his grades go up and down throughout the year.
I honestly think he's too small for HS sports, even something like cross country running. I just need to get off my ass and get him to the race track. As for the TV in the room. He has a TV in his bedroom. My reason is because I didn't. I've never slept very well. I just don't fall asleep unless I'm dead tired (or drunk) and the former doesn't happen until it's very late. As a kid I'd lie awake in bed for hours sometimes trying to fall asleep. I decided I never wanted my son to go through having to lie awake with his thoughts and emotions running through his mind like that. Oh, bed time? Whenever in the summer and about 10 on a school night. He gets up at 5:30 for school. |
First slap the wife and tell her to stfu, you are the boss..ruler of the house. and what you say goes....
Second those 15 and 16 year old need to be in bed by 8 PM. Lights out no talking just sleeping. X Boxes how permisive can you be? |
