Scariest movies you saw IN THE THEATRE

I'm putting that condition on it because I believe that in order to be fully creeped out, the full sized screen, the megasound system, and being trapped in there with other people is the way to get it done.

And if it gets to be too much, you can't hit the remote and take a break... you either have to man up and walk out... or man up and stay.

There are two for me... both of these infused me with a deep sense of dread and I was genuinely wondering if I could take it as the story unfolded.

I am not one to sit any further back than about the 5th to 8th row, either... IMO, you're a weenie of the first order if you sit near the back during a creature feature.

The Exorcist

In space, no one can hear you scream.

I saw the Exorcist with my parents when I was 12 y/o. Nice parenting, huh? I couldn't sleep in my bed for days. Thought if I did, I'd levitate.

The Shining.

I saw "Night of the Lepus" when I was in 2nd grade. That really hurt my feelings.

The demon scary stuff in the Exorcist, to me, wasn't the scary parts. It was the 1960's Hospital technology. That spinal tap scene scared the crap out of me. Pazuzu just made me laugh.

Bingo! And I'd read the book before I saw the movie.

And I have not, nor will I ever see, The Exorcist.

When I was a very young lad, my parents dropped me off to see the original "War of The Worlds"...they then went on to some function or other, picked me up afterwards.

I and another kid who had the same thing happen to him were hiding behind the seat backs...peeking through the cracks. Scared the bejesus out of both of us.

Friend and I went to see the Exorcist. That creeped me out so much I couldn't go back to my empty apt. Slept on his floor that night.

If you possessed any belief system in God, that movie put some serious doubt as to whether belief (or anything) was going to save you from evil. Powerful stuff.

I went to see Night of the Living Dead when I was in basic training (talk about not being to walk). Classic scary and gory movie. One redeeming feature of most horror flicks up to that point was that the main character manages to survive. Not this one. No one makes it out alive.

Halloween (the first one). Midnight movie, on halloween night. 1978 or 79 i think.. Geez, that was SCARY.. And one before that, a few years earlier, was Carrie. I was 13 and slept in my brothers room for a week afterwards!

I'm a bit younger than you, but I felt the same way seeing Exorcist 3 in the theater. I'm not a godly person, but the deep visceral fear that biblical evil can put in a man even affects me. We sure do know how to scare the living hell out of ourselves, don't we?

Night of the Living Dead.

My brother took me to see it back when I was around 10. I remember my mother cursing my brother out for taking me to see it. This one theater used to show it every Halloween.

I still get creeped out in cemeteries. The opening scenes, where the one zombie is walking around the cemetery in the distance , and the brother telling his sister "Hes coming to get you Barbara"did it to me.

Great input... really enjoying reading your comments. I forgot about Marathon Man... that scene with Hoffman's character strapped in the chair was perhaps the squirmiest time I've ever spent in a theatre. I guess it's because I had a coupla trips to my great uncle's dentist office when I was little and he didn't use novocaine.

Saw an excellent show last night... actually a series of shows... on Bravo; The 100 Scariest Movie Moments. Very interesting with lots of cool older and several foreign films... with very entertaining and insightful comments by actors, directors, and critics on the movies... including some you wouldn't normally think of like Deliverance, Misery, and Willy Wonka (huh?)... their top three were...

3. Exorcist
2. Alien
1. Jaws

The whole list is here:

I actually met the actor who played Jason in the first Halloween, I forget his name, but it was his first movie I believe. I remember him as being a really personable guy.

The Blair Witch Project.

I saw it before all the media hype ruined the plot.

I convinced those that I went with it was a documentary.

We took two cars home from the theater: one with all boys and one with all girls. The boys got home first. I stood in the corner facing the wall and everyone else hid behind the kitchen island. The first girl to come into the apartment saw me standing in the corner and knocked over two of her friends as she ran out of the apartment screaming.
