Doggone Days of Summer Road Rally
Doggone Days of Summer Road Rally
The Doggone Days of Summer Road Rally so named because it is scheduled for Sunday, September 13. This is the last weekend of summer and the official end of the Dog Days of Summer. The road rally, co-sponsored by Safe Animal Shelter and Whitey’s Fish Camp, is being held to raise much needed funds for Safe Animal Shelter. For those unfamiliar with this type of road rally, the premise of Doggone Days of Summer is for the driver and passenger to look for landmarks and clue s, for which they receive points, while driving a course laid out by the rally organizers. Participants will travel the roads and neighborhoods of south Clay County, driving approximately 35 miles for 1½ hours. It requires two people to compete. Instructions are given in code, which the passenger reads for the driver to execute. And, it takes both driver and passenger to look for clues (approximately 50) and checkpoint signs which are valued at 5 points each. The team that scores the most points in the time allocated will win the cash prize of $100. The rally is not a race. In fact, participants caught speeding will be disqualified from rally competition and teams returning early will have points subtracted from their overall score. Competitors are cautioned to stay within the speed limit at all times – especially while passing through neighborhoods. The rally will start at 3:00 PM on Sunday afternoon with teams checking in and getting final instructions prior to the starting time at 3:30 PM. Upon completing the course, teams will return to Whitey’s to enjoy food, beverages and live music. The winning team will be named once all the scores have been tallied. Cost to participate is $30.00 per team. Registration forms can be obtained at Safe Animal Shelter, 2913 County Road 220, Middleburg or at Whitey’s Fish Camp, County Road 220. For more information call the shelter 276-7233 or 298-1561.
