Talking about the 72 Summit Series, Canada vs USSR, Paul popped the winner but who was the coach and where were you when it happened.
I was in grade 8 and the high school I went to had a tv in every room, the day before the final game we asked our teacher if we were going to watch the game or not, he was not going to give us an answer so we all showed up the next day with our jackets on, ready to skip out if we couldn't watch the game, he saw we were serious and turned the TV on for us, he wanted to watch too. When PH scored the whole country erupted, it was fantastic. I know a girl that went to Russia with her family to watch the games there and all the Canucks were in the nose bleed section, when Paul scored they all stood and sung the National anthem, very emotional and a true Canadian moment. The Russians were good, the KLM line was superb - just not quite good enough though. Who was coaching and where were you when Paul scored? |

It was 3 years before I was born, but oh the stories I've heard! My father in law tells it from a high-school perspective: he was working at a garage or gas station or something, and he said the streets were completely empty. He was sent on a beer run sometime during the game, and said it was like a ghost town. Everyone - really, pretty much everyone - was glued to a TV set. Closest thing I've ever experienced was the Challenger in 1986 - they turned on the TV in my classroom - the only time that I ever remember live TV on in class. (I believe the opening of Berlin Wall was on a weekend, or after school hours - because I remember watching that live, but not in class)

I was 9 years old when this was going on. We had TVs in the classrooms and we were glued to it.
I remember how miserable my dad was when team Canada had their cans kicked early in the series.

Before my time, but have watched. Henderson was a key contributor, and obviously THE GOAL was huge. If you watch the second half of the series, where Canada's back was against the wall--Phil Esposito was the catalyst for Canada--he was a force and even Paul's series winning goal was a finish of a Phil Esposito forecheck.
Another little known tidbit was that if the final game had ended in a tie--Russia was going to claim victory in the series based on goal differential. In regard to the KLM line--they did not exist until the early 80's. The KLM line was Krutov, Larionov, and Makarov. The 72' series pre-dated their dominance. The 87' Canada Cup featured the KLM line in it's prime--and it is my contention that the 87 final 3 game series Russia Vs. Canada was the finest hockey ever played. The 1980 USA/Russia olympic semifinal game was the biggest upset in sports history, and a phenomenal scenario which can never be repeated now, but the 87 Canada Cup final series featured an assemblage of the best to ever play in both sides. That series was incredible. 72 goalie Ken Dryden wrote a great book (that eventually became a video series (Home Game) and there is a great chapter/video about the 72 series. Another great book is "The Red Machine" --I can't recall the author--it is the story of the rise and history of the Soviet national team--who dominated international hockey for several decades. In a way, today's hockey misses having a soviet team --they were like a traveling talent show/hockey phenenon-globetrotter types without the pranks and "set-up" opponent. A.B. |

I read the first post only, and have no clue what this thread is about. I'll go out on a limb, hockey?

Must be a Canadian thing.
I have no idea what the Canucks are talking about.

What I remember was Canada being out played in the beginning of the sries until Clarke took care of Kharmalov. Could be percieved as a cheap shot, but many believe it turned the series in favor of Canada.
I just remember being shocked on how well Russia played. The Canada vs USA World Cup series a few years back was exciting! Im sure that one still stings up north.
