My daughter.

I have three kids, 18, 16 and 8 years old. The little one has grown up in a house full of teenagers. Much to the consternation of her teachers, Brynn does NOT communicate like an 8 year old.

Brynn has a great appetite and eats pretty much everything we put on the table. Last night we had sliced heirloom tomatoes with soft mozzarella and fresh basil. Brynn wanted no part of it. I told her that was fine, but there would be no desert.

After an animated and tearful exchange, Brynn sat at the table with an unchewed mouthful of tomato and cheese with tears running down her face. She looked truly pathetic. Eventually she turned to me and said; "You think this is OK? What's wrong with you?

I laughed so hard I cried. I feel so very sorry for her teachers.

I've tried, I can't like raw tomatos. I can barely stand them when even though I usually say "no tomatos", I inevitably get them on sandwiches.

What you had for dinner sounds like an appetizer. I'd be all over the cheese, but the tomatos would need to be cooked first.

If my 9 year old sees tomatoes, basil and mozzarella she whines uncontrollably until she gets some.

We like it with a little balsamic vinegar too.

Why punish a child simply because she dislikes a certain food? They can't help their tastes, and like just about any human, will find some foods fairly repulsive, why force it?

Yeah, we had balsamic vinegar. The tomatoes were just a side dish. We also had lasagna, sourdough and cantaloupe.

Because I'm a bad father.

Actually she likes tomatoes. She likes cheese. Pretty sure she likes basil. She was just making a play for dietary independence. And since when is no desert a "punishment"? McLovin! Go to your room!

That's the ultimate punishment! Watching evervone smugly eat their cookies and ice cream.

I'll be in my room. Watching my 42" flat screen and surfing the net.

I can't eat zucchini. It makes me gag. My mom would make some type of zucchini every other day. As a kid, my parents never believed that it made me want to hurl, always thought I was trying to get out of eating my vegetables. To this day, I still can't eat zucchini, at least they don't bug me anymore.

P.S. I also like tomatos, pretty much every cheese, and basil, but oddly I dislike that tomato/mushy mozarella/basil salad.

P.P.S. On a somewhat more serious note, "She was just making a play for dietary independence" - is that a bad thing? That's one thing my wife and I kind of disagree on. She'd tend to agree with your course of action, where I would really disagree. I think it's good for kids to start asserting their independence by that age, I pretty much encourage it, not punish or discourage it. Sure, you can eventually "win" and force the kid to eat the food, but really, what is the intended point/lesson? I appreciate your posts and point of view, so I am curious as to your thinking.

(as your daughter eloquently stated: "You think this is OK? What's wrong with you?"! lol).

When being forced to eat crap i didn't like my strategy was to make it so unpleasant to be around me that my folk(s) would send me to bed without finishing.

My kids are 5.75 and 3 so I totally understand what you mean, Moses. SOmedays they like PB+J, others they don't. Kids are strange, I have concluded. I swear they dream about ways to drive you insane daily.

Our Sarah has MY temperment so that's usually where she gets into trouble.

The lady behind us gave the kids 3 fresh tomatoes from her garden yesterday. I didn't find out until they had smashed the crap out of them all over the basketball court. Wonderful.

I just shook my head and went back to what I was doing.

I never insist that my kids eat foods they genuinely don't like. I do insist that they not dismiss foods without trying them. It's doesn't help develop a diverse palate and it's rude to the chef!

My kids eat very well. They eat sushi, raw oysters and every vegetable imaginable. I'm sure their gustatory curiosity is due to our dinner table rules. By the way, there is rarely any drama at the table about trying new foods. They know the routine; they try it and if they don't like it they don't have to eat it.

That's pretty much what I do.

Mine will eat anything. At a sushi restaurant, they'll eat the uni, octopus, etc. I've actually regretted that one, since I think the uni is one of the most expensive items on the menu, and what once started as a dare has now become a desired and costly delicacy.
