Jeep Cherokee - A/C Water Leak Soaking Floor

I have a 98 Jeep Cherokee that is getting soaked on the passenger side floor. The issue has to do with the a/c system - isn't draining outside of the car.

The interweb hasn't been much help. Anyone have suggestions?

I think there's a small rubber nipple that sticks out of the firewall on the passenger's side. The nipple has a pinched end on it. Sometimes the nipple gets clogged, you can pinch it to unclog it.

We had a '97 Cherokee that would do the same thing. After a while, it stopped doing the flooding thing and started freezing up. I assume it was getting low on freon or something.

Yeah, I'm not sure how it is configured on a Cherokee, but your condensate drain is clogged. No big deal.

Is that nipple on the engine side?

This seems to be a popular problem with a thousand solutions.

Where is the condensate drain? A/C water would drain out under the passenger side chassis frame. I can't locate any sort of hose up there.

You'll never find it... It's in the frame behind where the front control arms mount.
To fix it
1. go to the passenger side of the interior and pull rug down underneath box
2. have small funel with hose ready, drill small hole (5/16") and allow water to drain.
you are going to drill at the bottom of the box, where it looks like a half circle in the center
of the circle
3. take shop hose and blow thru the hole. shuold free up the stuff in the drain
4. take a bolt of similar diameter with silicone and plug the hole
5. open cold beer and enjoy!

There is a lot of information on this site. Check out the Cherokee technical forums. I usually hang out in the TJ or the picture request forums.

Good luck,

I did this a couple of years ago when I tried to fix the same problem - there were a couple of leaves in there but no serious debris. Eventually I took it to the shop b/c I couldn't locate the source of the leak. They replaced a door seal and then put sealant on the inside around where I drilled the hole and also around the entire box.

I pulled this sealant out of the hole this morning. Again, just a few leaves. I used a shop vac and blew it out. Nothing major though. I think the problem is somewhere else.

Ask your Q in the "OEM Tech Discussion" forum.
I have a '92 XJ, no AC, thus no answer for you.
Good luck.

I still plan on digging around. But since Rattlsnak knows exactly how to fix this problem I am eagerly awaiting his instructions.

Thanks. I already did this - yesterday and a couple of years ago. No water came out.

The water doesn't smell like antifreeze by chance does it?

Nah ... it is certainly water. It isn't coming from the hole I drilled. The sources seems to be at the right corner somewhere.

Glad that the 911 doesn't anger me like this Jeep.

the only A/C service bulletins on a 98 ZJ are these:

24-003-03 A/C System Additives
24-009-02 A/C System Leak Detection
24-02-98 HEATER A/C HOUSING SERVICE
24-11-97 A/C EVAPORATOR ODOR

None of those address your concern. The only repair has been stated above in other posts. Something still has to be in the drain tube, or something higher up in the evap case not letting water get to the drain.
