A lot of kits are made for various 1911's. They may be adaptable to your Dan Wesson. If not, if you're willing to spend the money you can always have a one off custom barrel made.

My local shop got a pallet of Winchester 9mm on Thursday.

By the time I got in on Friday morning, there were six boxes left.

We're still in an ammo shortage.

The only thing I see sitting on shelves is .25 Auto and .44 Mag.

That's good and bad. Good in that they stock it, and bad and that if it's not selling they wont be stocking it for long.

I'm sure this has been covered, but what's a good on-line source for ammo?

This site seems pretty good:

Wow, that's both surprising and dissappointing. I own and shoot several revolvers and rifles in in this caliber, and find it to be the most useful all-around revolver round I've ever run accross. Of course, I have never actually bought ammunition in this caliber, or even component bullets. Every round of .45 Colt I have ever fired has been loaded by myself, one of my uncles, or my dad, including casting all of the bullets (they made the kids do that from a pretty early age - oh, the horror!). I've never had trouble getting brass, but maybe it well and truly is more of a hand loaders' and bullet casters' caliber these days.

Odd that it would not be more popular, what with all the cowboy action shooters out there, and all of their Peacemaker knock-offs. That, and Ruger still chambers the Blackhawk and Vaquero in that caliber (have several of each), Colt still makes the Peacemaker (several of those, too), and companies like U.S. Firearms are building "better Colts than Colt" (a few of them, too...). Folks must be handloading, or just not shooting them.

Jeff, I could see Colt .45 being a very popular handloader round. I'd think some of those guys would even use black powder.

71T Targa 09-08-2009 12:14 PM

Thanks, all three of these sites, in addition to the site Sniper listed, have GAP ammo in stock. I guess it's not that obscure.

Bro .45 colt has been a wildly popular round out west since before any of us was ever even dreamt of...

red-beard 09-08-2009 12:20 PM

.357 sig is a great round for Police. It has the ability to penetrate glass and steel and still have enough left to do harm to a bad guy. It is NOT common for a CHL holder to need to be able to shoot into a car. Police, yes. This is the reason I dropped it as a carry round.

I do need to pickup a .357sig/40S&W pistol, but it isn't needed. OTOH, the more I read and understand, penetration is key, and .357 sig penetrates. And the FMJ rounds are square headed.

.357SIG is ok for cold weather states where bad guys wear a lot of layers. I only carry it when I know I'll be out around wildlife or far away from crowds of people. Otherwise, I'll swap in my .40 barrel.

I know I do; I hve even killed game with black powder loaded .45 Colt. While I can get more velocity from smokeless, and it's a lot cleaner, black powder is as accurate for the first few cylinders full as any smokeless load.

I have three "standard" .45 Colt loads. The one I use the most consists of the RCBS .45-270 SAA bullet cast from wheelweights and loaded over 16.5 grains of 2400 for just under 1,000 fps from a 4 5/8" barrel. This is my day-to-day woods bumming, backpacking, and all-around self defense load. Works great on deer and pronghorns, too. My black powder load uses the same bullet over 38 grains of GOEX FFFg for just over 800 fps. My "Ruger only" load consists of a 300 grain LBT LFN over 23 grains of 296 for just about 1200 fps, again from a 4 5/8" barrel.

Darn near every shooter I know around here has at least one. All of my hunting partners who actually hunt with a revolver use it, prefering it over the .44 mag. It's a great round, and very popular among serious shooters. If I had to choose my "one gun", the .45 Colt would be a no-brainer.

m21sniper 09-08-2009 02:35 PM

Not sure what i'd pick if i could have only one pistol round, but whatever it was it would be something i could shoot out of an automatic.

azasadny 09-08-2009 05:03 PM

In all of my "brass catching" at the local ranges, I've only picked up 1 .45GAP shell. I would avoid it like the plague...

jyl 09-08-2009 05:51 PM

Gun sales are slowing rapidly so ammo sales will be next. The shelves will be stocked again in a few months.

Primers still seem to be lagging behind in this "recovery". I have several bricks of everything I use, but my less well-prepared reloading buddies all know that. I'm getting tired of them offering me their daughters...

legion 09-09-2009 05:42 AM

Yeah, I have a few bricks of the primers I use.

I haven't seen BLC2 in months though, and I'm down to my last three pounds.

71T Targa 09-09-2009 05:58 AM

Is there a good place to get an idea on pricing? At some price point this has to make sense and I'd like to figure out what that is. Gunbroker has them starting @400 fwiw

From what I can gather, the ammo is less available, but is by no means rare. Sure I can't get it at walmart, but I can get it at Gander Mountain, on-line, and apparently the Bass Pro shop.

Pa State Troopers are carring the 45GAP. My brother is a Trooper and does some of the training at his barracks. He reloads and has quiet a collection. He is very happy with it. He had had no problems with the weapon or round. When he was first training with it at the academy they did get some bad ammo. It was the manufactures fault. That was over a year ago.

Side note, I bought 1 of the old 40cal Berretas they had. Has the trooper patch on it. It was a vice guy who only shot it to qualify. Never carried it because it was too big for undercover.
