Re-learning the Guitar.

When I was young I took some formal guitar lessons. Reading sheet music and all that. I didn't get all of that down but I would like to learn some basic stuff again. So to you guitar players how does this online tutorial look?

Oh I should mention that I do have an acoustic and electric guitar. I much prefer the acoustic however.

Is the acoustic steel string or classical?

porsche4life 09-11-2009 08:21 PM

Classical

Then it's got nylon strings. Hard to play rock 'n roll on those, but can be done. What kind of music do you want to learn - rock, classical...

I just want to play. Once I get the method and rythm down I can grab the steel stringed electric and move there.

Oh and for the moment soft easy stuff

I like that riff. I really like Jack Johnson

I'm with you, I played a little as a kid through high school etc. but stopped most of my adult life.

Man, there sure are a lot more tools available today! At least for the casual player who just wants to learn some favorite rock songs.

I like this program a lot:

Try out the free trial.

Also, of course there are a ton of lessons and covers on youtube!

your link to the lesson didnt impress me. jack johnson is a good player to try to play like, but its gonna take some time. he is quite good. when i started, there was no internet. i used chord books, and tab books and tried to play along with records

now, you can find many great visual tutorials on youtube, or you can buy dvd lessons.

i would start by picking a song you want to learn that is somewhat basic and then do what you must do, to learn it.

ultimately you need to learn all the left hand and right hand "tricks" in order to play well. pull-0ffs, slides, hammer-ons etc... and combine it all....you can hear jack johnson doing that in the video you posted

if you can make it through some of the junk in these vids, listen to richard thompson's tips. they are pretty good and will give you and overview of what you need to accomplish

My recommendation to you is to get a live teacher. Its expensive, but you will make maximum advantage of the time. A good teacher will get you past a lot of bottlenecks and give you the motivation to stick with it. I tried to learn and keep up with the guitar and other instruments over many years and it only stuck when I went out and got lessons.

i agree that there are a lot of good resources out there too. Berkely school of music has distance learning options for mid range students to advanced. I doubt its cheap, but it might be worth looking into.

Good luck
