Who will get your car
 

I was reading an article by Paul Cockburn the other day. For our overseas members he writes for an Australian motor magazine and in the article he was musing over who would get his collection of cars when he shuffles off this mortal coil! He eventually said that the executor of his estate would take his children to a local race track and whoever lapped the fastest would get his prized Jaguar.
Now this set me thinking. I am a long way off becoming a contributer to greenhouse gasses (by cremation) but I need to think about who will get Ferdinand and the bike. My dear wife (who will inevitably outlive me) will of course inherit them but when she is gone then...... So we are 48 now, statistically I will live to 80 so I have 32 years to go. Ferdinand will be 60 years old by then. And I am not sure there will be any dinosaur juice left by then. The bike will go long before then. 165 bhp and old reflexes do NOT go together. But as a hypothetical point how will we decide who gets the car???? I would not trust my children to drive any of my cars on the race track. A daughter who is unsure what brand her car is ("its silver"), a son who thinks rain washes cars and another son who does not drive and has not bothered getting his license (at 22!!). So what to do?
I think we should donate Ferdinand to a museum. That way he will be washed, polished and cherished. It will save so many problems.
So what do other Pelicanites think?

I'm a bit older than that but am in the same boat as my son isn't a car guy. I'll try to "simplify" as I like to call it, before I get to far gone. But I imagine I'll just have my executor sell the one's I still have to good homes. Odd how you get to a point and these questions enter your mind...

The 911 will become my son's when he graduates high school. He is the oldest so that is my decision.

I do plan to teach both kids how to drive a stick with the car and maybe some car control tactics(nothing dangerous, of course.) My hope is that I will be able to send them to a driving class through the PCA.

My eldest daughter will be getting my 911.

I'm not sure it's really going to matter to me at the time but
she has instructions to park it in front of the church at my funeral...

My son and other daughter have very little interest in cars.

But the biggest problem I have is who is going to get my tools.
My eldest will get all of the tools for the 911 but I also have a Mill/Drill, Lathe
and a myriad of expensive "Starrett" measuring and set-up tools that go with it. (granite surface plate anyone?)
Not to mention my power tools and saw table...

same here only i hope by that time that happens my "coffin" will require 4 or 5 sites - i want a different body part in each car.

now that i have said that it kind of makes me feel like a serial killer....

I think LakeCleElum, no, I've ALWAYS thought LakeCleElum is a perfect gentleman and you can't fault his generosity.

I've struggled with this same question. My daughter learned to drive a manual in the Porsche, but she couldn't take care of it (maybe she'll marry someone who can), and my stepson tries to go for a week without a new dent in his beater.

I just moved into a new house with a small garage because I knew that rebuilding any more cars would be a waste - there's nobody to pass them onto. I'm just going to hang onto my one car - even if I can only prop myself up in the garage and look at it. Maybe someone can drive me around in it after I'm too old - but they probably wouldn't know how to trail brake or double clutch and I'd just go crazy.

Right now, I'll either keep it till I'm gone - or try to find someone that will actually take care of it, appreciate it , and enjoy it for what it is. I guess I'll sleep better at night knowing that my hard work will live on after I'm gone.

With my daughter, I made going through 3 PCA skills days a requirement for getting her license. To get her own car, required 3 PC track events once she turned 18. Now she's 22, has over 50 days on track, and s quite the hot shoe. She's also one of the few people I feel comfortable riding shotgun with.

I have created a monster! Plan the exact same for my son, now 15.

Funny, we had this very discussion at the dinner table the other day. My son, currently 17 and a car guy (325i), gets both Carreras.

I am only 22 (I've had mine since I was 20), who knows who will get my SC. My wife and I just found out that she is pregnant so hopefully the baby will get it someday. :)

Whichever relative seems most deserving (i.e. the one that will appreciate it most of all). Remains to be seen.
