Anyone knowledgeable about FL home insurance ?
Quick question that I cannot seem to get an answer for: Can you get homeowner's insurance without hurricane coverage in the great state of FL ?
I really don't want to pay $3000 per year for insurance to help spread the load with mobile home coastal dwellers... My reasons are varied but, mostly, my house is built like adolf's bunker and if something were to take it down, the whole state would be leveled anyway ( and all ins. companies bankrupt). Also the biggest risk in my eyes is flood (even though I'm not in a flood zone) and that is NOT covered by hurricane ins. anyway ! Finally the premium + deductible would pay for a new roof in 2 years, the risk sounds reasonnable... well maybe not, but I'm tired of paying that much for ins and prop.tax ... I own the place outright... I thought I could get just fire/theft/umbrella without hurricane if I elect not to get that. Apparently that is hard done ! Any experience on the matter ? |

No Mortgage, its your decision. I do not know where you live (coastal etc..) but you can have a windstorm mitigation done and submit that to your insurance company. If your house is as solid as you say, you will see huge savings in windstorm coverage.
Mine went from $6500 to $3500 and is now $1500 for windstorm and fire theft etc. together. On a replacement value of 200K. A friend of mine has a house in the Abaco Island chain of the Bahamas, 20 years ago when he built the house for cash, Insurance companies wanted 10K a year to insure. He self in sured, lost the house once and rebuilt on his own dime, and is still 10's of thousand ahead of the game.
