Doesn't starting a thread with "Hope this doesn't go to PARF" make it political????

There seems to be thread trend lately of starting a thread with the phrase... " Please do not make this thread go to PARF"... or... "Hope this does not end up in PARF"......

And of course, it IS a political thread in spite of the often feeble attempt to possibly 'spin' it on opening.

Pazuzu's space thread has flirted with banishment to thick skinned land several times, and I applaud the mods for letting it 'run' a little longer.

But for the most part, the ones that really did belong in PARF went there anyway.

Of course, I expect that this thread will end up in PARF-land any moment now.

I love the resources here in PP land, and OT has provided numerous and invaluable viewpoints over the years that would not automatically arrive at my brain any other way. I spend so much of my time isolated from the real world behind a crash-proof door 9 miles up, watching the world pass under my feet at 460 knots. Have recently moved as far out in the country as possible to escape the zombies in town, so this is a source for 'reality', and a 'reality check' at the same time.

I would have thought I would be the last person to ever go to PARF voluntarily, but find myself in there enough lately to see if I am the only one seeing what is happening to this country, and discovering, to my relief, that I am not alone.

Now back to our regularly scheduled forum.

"Doesn't starting a thread with "Hope this doesn't go to PARF" make it political????"
Only if you're tabs.

Did you just call tabs "crap"?

My interpretation is that often what makes a thread PARF is not that it touches on political issues, but that the thread participants take an blatantly partisan, name-calling, mud-slinging approach to it.

We've been able to have discussions on healthcare, tax policy, solar power, hybrid cars, economic outlook, state budget shortfalls, stock markets, etc that stayed out of PARF. Even though all of these topics do involve political factors in some way. It's hard to come up with a serious topic that doesn't have some connection to politics.

The reason those discussions stayed out of the PARF sewer is because the participants refrained from throwing in the cheap shots and name calling ("its Bush's fault", "its Obama's fault", etc) that quickly turn a thread nasty and partisan.

Once threads go to PARF, they become remarkably dumbed-down and pointless, in my view. I check in on the PARF threads occasionally and have no desire to participate.

So, my interpretation of the "hope this doesn't go to PARF" comments is that they are a plea for people to be civil, mature, thoughtful, analytical, and non-partisan in their comments.

That is EXACTLY what I meant in my thread

Do you really think so? I was pretty happy that it had not crossed over in any way. It's *possible* that the last bit between P-o-P and me might have moved that way, but I hoped it wasn't viewed that way.

Buddha may then like the HTC Touch Pro 2. More than 2x the screen resolution and a real keyboard. HaHa...

I think this thread speaks pretty well for itself! Y'all have me laughing on a day where laughing was not on the agenda.

Mike; Good job so far. I don't think your posts are the flirty problem.

Scott, if you knew how isolated I usually am, this passes pretty well for reality. Online news (BBC and Local at home) keeps the cobwebs from forming.

Your honor, the defense rests.

motion 09-17-2009 02:23 PM

Mike,

Where did you move to? You gonna spill it?

fingpilot 09-17-2009 02:59 PM

Was trying to keep it quiet, but I'll tell you since you are what I aspire to become someday.

But don't tell anyone else, or they will show up thinking I have a free place to stay and great roads for driving and riding on all around me.

30 miles east of Redding, up in the hills near Mt. Lassen. Address is Shingletown. It's now the second residence since I sold the boat in King Harbor.

mossguy 09-17-2009 04:04 PM

So Mike, How is/are Shingletown and Jean, Nevada correlated?

Best,
Tom

motion 09-17-2009 04:13 PM

LOL, sounds like you got what you wanted. Awesome!!! I have family in Millville, just a bit west of you. Beautiful area & you're right, awesome country roads everywhere. Congrats, Mike!

Obama didn't carry either city.

Oh wait, did I say that? :p

Sounds like good riding territory Mike, except maybe in the winter.

fingpilot 09-17-2009 04:47 PM

Jean is still the official primary residence. I am counting on Nevada spending my entire income tax contribution on supporting poor unwed pregnant visitors to this country.

Every cent.

I am there a good deal of the time checking up on pregnancy rates and what my state senators are doing about it.

Mr. Reid I am not worried about, there isn't enough pharmacologicals in the state to get him we we-ing up.

Mr. Ensign I am counting on to take up the cause, pardon the pun.

State motto?

Battle Born!

(We joined the union during the Civil War). We intend to be the first one to leave the Union during the next civil war.
