Progress in 50 Years
Interesting video; my sisters and I once rode around in the backseat of one of these '59 Chevys (maternal grandparents' car).

The color matched fuzzy dice was a nice touch.

WOW!!!
My first car was a 2-door 1959 Chevy Bel-Aire, I paid $45 for it in 1970. It was really rusted in the rear quarter panels. So bad so that when we went from Oak Ridge to the Smokey Mountains to harvest pot (not very good pot, I might add), the pot plants were sticking out of the rust holes in the bottom of the rear fender wells. I even put two point seat belts in it that I bought at Sears (at 16 years old no less!). Thanks for posting Jim. |
I bet a '59 Benz would do a lot better in that crash...

Yes, the '59 MB had the "safety body" but it didn't have much market penetration in the US then. I would estimate fewer than 10,000 were imported compared to to 1.4 million 1959 Chevrolet Bel-Air cars and other model variations of the basic car produced.
