Anyone from Wisconsin? Tell me about it.

I am contemplating relocating from Pa to Wisconsin, the reason is a new job. So curious to know how you like it and where are the neat/cool places to start looking to live for a young family. Yes I'll be bringing my P car along!

You didn't say what part of WI you will be in.

My wife and I lived in Wauwatosa (borders Milwaukee to the west) for 4 years. Life around Milwaukee is suprisingly cosmopolitan. The lakefront area of Milwaukee stretching from downtown to the UW campus is nice had has seen huge development in the past 15 years. The rest of Milwaukee (at least to the north) is some of the most violent ghetto I have ever seen, and I'm from Detroit, so thats saying something. The entire Milwaukee area has become a bit of bedroom community of Chicago, which is only about 1:15 to the south.

The western suburbs of Milwaukee like Brookfield and Peawaukee are very nice. We have a few friends who live there and are raising their children there. Very suburban. Obviously the farther out you go, the more rural it gets. To the north, Mequon and the surrounding areas are quite nice as well.

Madision is typical midwestern college town, a pocket of diversity. Nice city built around 2 lakes.

The farther north you go in Wisconsin, the more 'Fargo' it gets. I never cared for Greenbay/Appleton, but if you are the church going conservative types you might like it.

Door county, just to the north east of Green Bay is beautiful during the summer months. Wonderful vacation area.

Hard to give you much guidance without knowing the area you are looking in. WI is a sportsmans paradise. Amazing fishing/hunting/outdoor activites. I loving cycling, and while the winters sucked, cycling in summer was fantastic. Very easy to get from urban areas into the country.

BTW, the winters BLOW. Can't put liptstick on that pig.

What part of Wisconsin? Speedracing944 lives in southern/central Wisconsin.

I drive the state from bottom to top to get to the UP every summer.

They make cheese there, it's cold as hell, and their sports teams all suck.

Great, another longhood coming to the MW. Where are you moving to in WI? Yes, like northern IL, the weather is great in summer, but sucks any other time. Ssshhhh, there is a little known secret about southwest WI - they have some of the best driving roads around.

It's beautiful but just might be the worst state in the union for speed enforcement. 55 mph everywhere and if you're from MN. or any other state, they follow you to an ATM for payment on the spot or throw you in jail. Not kidding.

Miraculously, that's true. My bro-in-law and I were pulled over outside Ashland 2 months ago. He's from Atlanta and we were in a rental, the officer required him to pay ON THE SPOT! Ran his f*cking credit card!!!!!!

And they say law enforcement isn't for revenue generation....

You guys are too funny, my wife was looking at the area right on the border above Chicago. But in reality I could live in the follwoing states as I would be covering a large territory, ND, SD, NE, KS, WI, IA, MO, IL, IN, OH, MI, I have no freaking idea why she chose WI. Any input would be appreciated, yes we are big time fishermen, not too big into hunting although I don't have a problem with it.

One of my favorite trout streams isn't too far from Bruce's Crossing, which I assume you pass through as well.

Where is the job? Sounds like that would be the key factor? OOPS, just saw your followup.. "Above Chicago", ack NO! From looking at the territories listed (and the car as a factor) I'd go for any of the Southwest part of the state as someone else mentioned if you don't mind a more rural setting. A lot like the area around State College (iirc). I thrash the P-car through those twisties whenever I can.

That area is mostly trout waters but there are exceptions within reasonable driving distances (depending exactly where you land).

I've been in SE WI 43 years. Look at the Madison area. Middleton (a suburb) was just ranked top 5 on some list of best places to live in the country. Madison has also been ranked a top 5 place to live. Both Milwaukee and Chicago are only 1.5 hours away. Cities I'd also look at would be in the area of Watertown and Oconomowoc. They are smaller towns within an hour of both Milwaukee and Madison. I have not heard many good things about the area you are looking at (Racine / Kenosha).
