PC vs Xbox for gaming: Call of Duty

I have decided I need to stop playing the ancient game I have been playing (Joint Operations, a later version of the old Delta Force games). Call of Duty seems to be the best option. I want a military based first person shooter (open to suggestions). I like games that have flexible game play (you can attack for a while, then change weapons and be a sniper), large levels that you can explore and NO hackers. I freaking hate playing games that have been hacked to bits.

My big question is 'new PC' vs. 'getting an Xbox'. I have always been a PC gamer, but now I am looking at the costs of building out a new gaming machine, and it doesn't seem worth it. You can get the top of the line Xbox for $300. Ad to this the fact that I picked up an HD 52" TV last year....ANY reason I should stick with PC gaming?

I would go Xbox. The best controllers are there and the graphics are better, the online interface is just as good. Plus the game doesnt bog down your pc.

I have a PS3 not an Xbox but agree with the premise that is is much more pleasant overall to use the big TV and audio rig, true gaming controllers, comfortable chair/sofa, etc. than a typical PC. Clearly you can buy/build a crazy gaming PC and hook it up to your home theater system, but you're probably looking at 5-10X or more the cost vs. a console. Plus it will need more maintenance (patches, antivirus etc.) YMMV.

It doesn't seem possible to get the same level of control with a 'controller' (or even two, one in each hand) as you can with a keyboard and mouse, for FPS games.

I also find PC gaming easier to get in and get out of, just play for 5-15 minutes. Also, if you stick with last years hardware, the cost is the same.

Get a PS3. It also is a Blu Ray player which is a major advantage over the XBOX. XBOX can play Blu Rays but you need an expansion module for it which runs about $150 extra.

PC gaming is far superior, but it costs more.

It all depends though on your comfort level of playing with a keyboard versus a controller.

Xbox is where it's at.

Natal, gesture control, comes out soon.

We know of no plans from Sony for gesture control on the PS3.

You guys with Xbox's should check out the Section 8 demo.

PC Demo will be coming soon.

Section 8 (Xbox 360, PC) - Official Game Website

Better yet buy it.

Xbox is where most of the hardcore gamers are. In FPS it is the superior platform. You can't buy or build a computer that cheap that will run the game that smooth and quick. Plus you can play Forza.

By brother has an X-box, my god son a PS3. I play CoD WaW/Nazi Zombies on both, the game play is really just as good on either.

I am a virtual fighter pilot... play Aces High quite a bit... I did try WWII online(battlefield europe) a couple of weeks ago and liked it... The flight model in the game is not as good as Aces High, but I really enjoyed the ground war. It was pretty cool jumping into a cargo plane that was piloted by another player and jumping out over a town that you were attacking. You had to progress in your points before you could make it to sniper level, but was a very cool game... They have a free 2 week trial so give it a shot. There is a steep learning curve on the game, but once you have mastered that, it is very fun...

Thanks guys.

I do worry about the controllers. I like having a keyboard and being able to map out all the functions just the way I like it. Definitely leaning towards Xbox. If I decide it sucks, I can always unload the thing or gift it to buddy.

Cheers.

I, literally, know nothing about this stuff, but my son plays Crysis on his PC and it is the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

I bought a PS3, and hate playing FPS on it. I have also recently built a new PC (i7, 285GTX, 6GB ram, etc etc.) and love playing COD4 & Crysis on it.

To me, the mouse/keyboard feel is irreplaceable by a game controller.

Honestly, 4 simple arrow keys cannot begin to match the manueverability of dual analog sticks.

I played BF2 online (PC) for awhile. Man, that was addicting fun. We have an x-box and I cannot get used to the controls. I much prefer the keyboard.

Dual analog sticks can't match the manueverability of a 4k dpi gaming mouse & a keyboard programmed with hot-keys.

PC gaming is far superior to any console setup. I (sons) have an Xbox 360 and a PS3 and they both play FPS on my PC. Now i will say that for more than one player, consoles obviously are better as you can play against each in sports games like hockey, fottball etc, but you stated FPS like COD/Crysis/Far Cry, etc and you cannot beat a PC for that especially for online gaming.

try the section8 demo

32 players on 360 and 40 on PC

plus we have xservers available so you can host your own server if you want

cool feature is burn in, you drop into the game from above so no more getting blasted as soon as you spawn

A keyboard with a 4 directional arrowpad.

I am quite good with both modes of operation. Honestly a dual analog stick buries WASD/Arrow keys.
