One Hell of a Way to Spend a Friday Night
Gettin' drunk and shootin' rats.
I was barbecuing earlier in the evening, and when I went to let my Golden Retriever Katie out one last time for the night, I spooked a rat off the grill. I don't like rats on my grill... So, #2 son and I retrieve the Mag Lite and his Sheridan Blue Streak 5mm air rifle. He pots the first one from a pine tree right off the deck, where he had spooked from the barbeque. Alex decides one is enough and heads back in to play Forza, but I can hear more in the back hedge. It ain't over yet, you little bastards... I set my usual peanut butter bait on a limb in one of the apple trees, crack a beer, pump the Sheridan back up, and pull up my rocking chair. Two hours later, I had two more. There are more out there, though, so maybe I'll go after them again tomorrow. The wife wants me to set traps and knock this crap off. I keep telling her that's hardly sporting. Here is one I recovered. The rest fell into the hedge, and will have to be recovered in the daylight. The rifle is wearing a Beeman pistol scope in an old Sheridan Intermount; the "scout scope" mounting works well on a pneumatic rifle, as it leaves a good handhold behind it for pumping. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1253942189.jpg |
cool,, how did it taste?

LOL! Back in the good old days, a grade school buddy & I would ride our bikes to the local dump and shoot rats with our .22's. With the full blessing of the management, BTW.
Kind of makes me sorry for today's kids... |
Yeah, you should fire up that grill and grab a couple of skewers.
|
Has anybody here also read the book "King Rat"?

My Dad and his brothers would go to the dump spotlighting rats with a .22 when they were in HS, things never change in small towns. |
My ex-wife and I were visiting some of her friends in Baltimore about 15 years ago. This was his nightly fun!
You need to go whole hog and get some night vison goggles and some IR spotlights! |
one rat ran through our backyard hedges, and i immediately tried to parlay it into an opportunity to buy a pellet rifle. my wife caught on fast, and said, "let's see if we see it again". i center punched it with a blunt tipped arrow already while it was pilfering chicken feed. damn.
jeff, freeze that thing and mail it to me...i want a pellet rifle bad! back to that scout mount...i saw a friend's lever action rifle, a new marlin i think. he had a scout mounted scope on it. the rifle was awesome! |
Ah, another great Friday night at the Higgins' household. ;)
